I love how he sings "It's my time to shine, like a tuna in the brine." These once living things shine the most when they're dead. I love that.

I really like this song because I can relate to it, your explanation of the song Skwidkid was really good! :)

In the opening lines Johns talks about someone who has “opened the doors to my trust”. Someone who has perhaps helped him break out of his shell. He then seems to describe what it was like to be locked up in depression and how he lived his life as a lie. The song now becomes a warning to others not to go through the experiences he went through. He warns not to let fear rule your life, because fear will lead to lies, many lies, and if you let them rule your life you will eventually “lie amongst your lies/ like a tuna in the brine”. He then seems to advise you to work to fix your flaws instead of covering them up with lies and selfish acts. This is the gist of the rest of the song.

The tuna in the brine metaphor is so wonderfully original. Somehow, makes tuna seem a lot less mundane when he sings it. I say tuna: boring. He sings tuna: epic and moving. Bah.

for apacherosepeacock, I heard somewhere that the song is about getting caught in the lies you tell, so the line "lie amongst your lies like tuna in the brine" is accepting the level you've sunken to as you live with the lies you've told

yep, great song this one. easily the sunflower amongst the weeds that made up diorama. there were a few good songs though of course. the "disney musical" part as mentioned above is my favrite moment on the album, that and the end of one way mule. "the light in my darkest hour is fear". the thing that keeps him going through sadness is the fear of what could be worse - maybe he is scared to kill himself? "darkest hour" is a pretty strong term - not to be taken lightly. this song reminds me of petrol and chlorine, purely because it stands out of the album both musically and lyrically with emotion and experimentation.

The whole Tuna in the brine thing was derived from Daniel as a child watching a tin of tuna being opened, and being amazed how shiny it was, but it was so oily. Track by Track from the diorama box comes in handy in times like these...
