-Straight Lines-

(playing the CD version you need to tune ˝ step down, Eb|Ab|Db|Gb|Bb|Eb)

I have tried and tried to see how Daniel plays this song live, but it's always different
time to time.
In the Chorus part where it stands (C#/A, C/A, B/A) Daniel only plays the tones C#,C,
Bm, when he plays live). And one more thing!, the middlepart.. "I don't need no time to
you could play just an A chord, instead of C#/A. I think that's all..for now!.
But I hope that you'll at least understand the meaning of the chords I have wrote.

"It took me a long time to realize that the sound Ben, Chris and I make when we play my songs is something special", says the Silverchair frontman. "I've been thinking a lot since we finished the album about were this fits into the other stuff we've done. The way I see it the first album was naivety, the second one was anger, the third one was depression and the last one was escapism. Young Modern is all about acceptance. It's about embracing who we are as band and just really enjoying ourselves because that's all that really matters. Hopefully listening to this album will make other people feel what we feel when we play these songs together because I've finally figured out that that's a very special feeling." Can't be any more correct than that. And another thing. If diorama and straight lines 'commercial' then it would make tool look like simple plan. I know there is a lot of us silverchair fans that, myself included, prefer the first two albums, however bands change and there is no way in hell silverchair have ever changed in a bad way. No matter whatever people say, musically, Diorama is a work of a genius that is Daniel Johns as will be Young Modern.

While I don't think silverchair have become commercial, I do think they've lost their edge. I classify this song as alt-pop, not rock whatsoever. I don't know, maybe his happy music just doesn't suit me. I adored the Dissociatives, and I adore silverchair even more - especially Neon Ballroom and Diorama - so I can hope that there's something on this album to give me hope. While the song has beautiful sentiment and lyrics, I simply don't like it that much. I think his singing has certainly been better, that Ben and Chris don't really get to do very much, and that there is far too much keyboard for a silverchair song. My two cents.

I'm sorry "old chair fans" but what you fail to understand is that although excellent albums, Frogstomp and Freak Show are long gone. These guys have developed into their own style of music its not commercial at all. Daniel is an unbelievable singer/songwriter with incredible range in vocals. This is the first song they put out from the new album but wait and see maybe you'll be surprised

Commercialism isn't real. It's a term thrown around by snobs that think, because they listened to something first (or claimed to have) they are 'true' fans. Anyway, [/endrant] This song grew on me. I didn't love it right away, but it did make me want to listen to it more than once. A lot more than once, and every time I heard it I liked it just that little bit more. I'll say this for the Chair boys, they can really write music. I've always loved Daniel's lyrics, they're very interesting. He may not be the greatest song writer of all time, but his lyrics always seem personal and relatable at the same time (a rare talent). But as I said, as far as music goes, they're growing more talented by the album. I'm a huge Silverchair fan. Frogstomp was the album that got me into grunge music. Freakshow I listened to many times in my teenage angst, and the same goes for Neon Ballroom. Diorama was the stand out album for the Chair, and the year it came out was a break through year for me. I grew up with this music and I have to say, I'm truly impressed by what I've heard of Young Modern so far. Not being afraid to do something different, something that you're passionate about, should be praised. Oh, and I think the lyrics, while they probably have a deeper meaning for Daniel Johns, is mainly about moving on, as someone else said earlier. Fantastic song.

i agree, the commericial stuff is annoying, and they need to get back to their early roots. i dont care about all the mature music. Rock music is supposed to be played loud and distorted! :)

‘….SPARKS ignite in training for thought about no-one & nothing in particular / there's good will inside of me…’ This is the core of the song. Sparks are what you see when you reach an ephemeral & momentary state of Nirvana, when you have the most inspirational thought, or conversely think about something banal…but either way you transcend higher plains/realms/dimensions & you are in union with them for a brief moment in time: as sparks don’t last more than a second. For the truly enlightened ones, you see SPARKS every now & then in moments of solitude & privacy, OR they could just appear out of nowhere, much like a network of spies/angels/aliens or a combination these three: this agnostic’s new found pseudo HOLY TRINITY. The other message of the song is about expressing how Daniel wants to live The Right Life, the fair life, the ethical life. He's forsaking drugs, booze, sex with groupies...& he wants to be faithful to his wife Natalie Imbruglia. He wants to be a believer, desperate to find in life all that is good & righteous. He's obviously looking very fit & toned in the video, so he is now healthy, gotten over his growing pains & past health problems that engulfed him prior ‘…wake me up strong in the morning…’. The line: '…set me on fire in the evening…' is Daniel reaffirming his love of being a superstar on stage & performing music. The first two lines to me suggest smoking cigarettes & drugs kills & leads to no-one. Overall an inspirational COLDPLAY-esque song...

i agree with Chelsea. it's a positive song and about persevering through times when you feel alone it's pretty much summed up in all the verses.

I disagree that Silcerchair have gone commercial. The first time that this song was ever played on the radio was on Triple J, then the commercial stations caught on and started playing it because it is such a good song, not because the band has 'sold out'. The first The songs are all written by daniel and have become more complex as he has become a better songwriter. I can't wait for the new album.

comparing Straight Lines to earlier albulms like Frogstomp is like trying to compare the Red Hot Chili Peppers debut to Stadium Arcadium...you just can't fo it because you have got to expect a band to change at least a little after over a decade of playing...I think it's a little harsh to imply they're selling out

.sherry. this is raw emotion, keep listening to this song, it makes you think, some specific lines do make you think about things. just because johns isn't screaming his heart out doesn't mean emotion isn't involved. i adore this song more and more i hear it, the voice in my head keeps getting louder and louder saying 'YOU LOVE IT'. i think young modern will represent everything silverchair is good at, great lyrics, great melody. these guys had to grow up and become serious songwriters, they are all about the music. who cares about commercialism? if you were a fan, commercial or not shouldn't make a difference.

I agreee. This is not a bad song, and the last two albums were ok, but i was hoping for something heavier this time, more like frogstomp and freakshow, which are two of my favourite albums.

Im so glad someone posted the lyrics!! I LOVE the new song, the video is pretty good too...very interesting to see Daniel dancing somewhat. to me, its about being on your own...but still making it through...no matter how bad it gets...straight through it all.

Sounds like it could be about John's battle with reactive arthritis, what with the fevers, setting on fire, desperation, etc.
