| this song is so quotable. pretty much every line in this song is so meaningful to me. i think hes talking about just typical relationships now days are so full of contradictions and dissappointments. when you have someone to love that is what you are supposed to do, love.. but now all the 'gf bf', 'love you forever' stuff is shit. everyone gets hurt in the relationship. and this is my favorite part | |

| This is by far my favorite silverstein song!! I love the part when he says " Ignorance is bliss.. I wish i could never love you" like he would rather not know what it was like to be in love with her than to have ever experienced it in the first place. Like the pain was that bad.. Completely opposes the "better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all" quote. Thats soo how i feel about my ex!! | |

| The constant use of contradictions is what brings my attention to this song the most. "promise you and let you down," "follow me, lead you astray," etc. It only to adds to the impact the music and Shane's screaming make, as well as the the intensification the entire song wonderfully portrays. Irony is such a powerful medium if used correctly, and I think Silverstein used it quite well. The lyrics "I can resist everything except temptation" and "so ironic that a heart made by man, when broken is easily fixed but a human hurt can last a lifetime" give me a feeling that's rather inexplicable to me. | |

| hah oops.. here we go. "so ironic that a heart made by man, when broken is easily fixed but a human hurt can last a lifetime" like the saying goes love hurts. "rust or decay the fire or the flame" this is kind of like one choice disguised as two. or like picking your poison, meaning that now days it seems like you have no choice but to have a relationship that sucks. "you and i will lead the path to change pave the way" but hes saying that there is more than one choice and they can make their own path. aww.. | |

| The first verse: You can "resist everything except temptation". But what else in the world is there to resist except temptation? It's just another way of admitting that you can't resist anything. "[Your] body breaks but [you're] still intact inside", so even though you're hurting yourself physically you can't erase the things that are inside which was actually your true target. "[Your] human instinct" of "lov[ing] unconditionally" is just how you can not help yourself from loving. It's part of being human. The second verse is reciting ways how the person you love isn't human, unlike you. She "can breathe without oxygen and live without sorrow". She doesn't have a weakness and there's nothing that can hurt her at all. You envy her so much in how she can feel nothing about what had happened while you're hurting yourself for it. Yet, you pit her soul which is probably going to hell. "Ignorance is bliss" means if you didn't know her you wouldn't love her and you really wish that "[you] could never love [her]". In the chorus you are lying to her, and at the same time you're in pain because your conscience is killing you. Everything's not going to work out because of the failure you know you are. You let your emotions take control over you. Also, you can't sleep; the only thing you hear is the words that she had said that will always haunt and kill you. I think that the greatest irony is that how God is the most perfect being in the universe and His greatest creation can become broken beyond repair, yet the backward, sinful, inperfect humans can create robots that are "easily fixed". | |

| Well I never really understood this until I was in a situation with someone that I think is simliar to what this song is about. "i can resist everything except temptation, my body breaks, i'm intact inside, my human instinct i can love unconditionally" Basically I think this part is about how he can't resist a girl he loves even though she treats him like crap. "cross my heart and lie to you (my conscience plagues at me, fills me with this despair) failure within me promise you and let you down (emotion conquers my soul, robs me of myself)brings me to my knees follow me, lead you astray (nourish myself with fear, give me the pain to fail loathe myself to sleep your words kill me" This part is about how he lies to himself and pretends she cares just as much about him as he does about her but inside its killing him because he knows she really doesn't. His love takes control and "robs him of himself" "you can breathe without oxygen and live without sorrow how i envy you though pity your ghost ignorance is bliss i wish i could never love you" This is about how she can live without feeling bad for all the horrible things she has done and he envies how she can do it, but then again he feels bad for her because he loved her so much and he wishes he never could love her because shes so screwed up. "so ironic that a heart made by man, when broken is easily fixed but a human hurt can last a lifetime rust or decay the fire or the flame you and i will lead the path to change pave the way" This is my favorite part because when he says "a heart made by man when broken is easily fixed but a human hurt can last a lifetime" means that she doesn't feel any pain because she makes up pretend love for people so she can let go of others easily because her emotions aren't real (a heart made by man), but with him he has real emotions and he can't get over things as easily as her (a human hurt can last a lifetime) and the last part is him basically saying he wants to change but she needs to lead the way. I love this song so much it describes my experience so perfectly. | |

| I actually think this song is more of a plea to get someone back. He hates himself for his own weakness and envies her for the ability to be cold and dry. "So ironic that a heart made by man, when broken is easily fixed. But a human hurt can last a lifetime." To me this line means that no matter how far a society advances in medicine to fix the physical ailments, something mental sticks longer - mind over matter. "Rust or decay, the fire or the flame." I think it's pretty much saying the same thing that "The Dance" by Garth Brooks says.. I wouldn't go back and change any of it. | |
