The women was cheating on him and he knew it and just let it go but he is know realizing that he is worth more then that althought he loves her very deeply he doesn't deseve it and he breaks up with her. And is going through such a difficult time because he has such stronge feelings for her. Amazing song!!! that is just my oppinoin xox

It's a breakup song, but I don't think it ends with a breakup. The singer knows he should break up for his own good, but I don't think he can. The way it ends with "and it's not gonna change", repeating the chorus, and the sort of unresolved sound to the music at the end--his resolution to break up isn't gonna do it.

the end of a releationship that ended with disloyalty and pain. she cheated on him and messed with his mind. he gave her all he had-heart body and soul and she took it- and then disregarded it when she committed her selfish acts.so hes tired of the games tired of the drama-so he finally says taht he is done-she was his true love and he will never forget her because she holds a place so deep in his heart but he will"sail" away-(sailing representing freedom) and seas representing far distance-to break away from the entire relationship- the good and the bad. he will pull himself to gether again-even after the mess she left him in-

the one in the relationship who is leaving due to dishonesty and lying has a lot of strength. when you love someone as much as that, it is way hard to just pull away. its hard to just set yourself apart and let them see what they did to you. yeah... its not like i know this from experience... i admire the fact that they can pull away. i wish i could.

I agree, this is a fricken great song. Even though my ex didn't cheat on me, it fits pretty damn perfectly. And thats what makes great music, finding music that fits your life. And thats why I fricken love music. Once again, just want to say this is an amazing song, even though it usually makes me depressed.

This song is just full of so much emotion. I agree with everyone about it being about a broken relationship, but I don't think that the relationship ends. I agree with Garyg. How it ends with "and it's not going to change." I think he is so in love with this girl but he knows that their not meant to be and she is just killing him but he can't escape their relationship, and in a way he doesnt want to. I just simply love this song. Silverstein is one of my favorite bands, their amazing guys and their talent is unbelieveable.

This is the song you play when you get every card she sent you, every photo of you and her together, and every soppy love letter she gave you... then shred them up, put them in a can, soak it with meths, light a match and watch it shrivel up and turn into ashes under the flames.

i think this song has so much meaning to it...theres this girl..she might be the best thing that has ever happened to you but down the road you know it never works out...you have some good times and some laughs but now something just went wrong...shes lieing to him and hurting him becuase he still likes her alot...he says that he wont forget her becuase of all the good times they've had together but he cant take it anymore...he is now ready to move on...as hard as it might be he is going to try and just sit there and remeber all the good times that they had and all the bad times...but hes not going to look at it as a bad thing..if anything this just helped him down the road and now hes ready to live life and learn from his mastakes... thats how i see the song...its basicly really how it sounds...this song has really got to me becuase i have been in that situation and i really understand whats going on with him

okay well first off the song is titled discovering the waterfront, which is also the name of the album. i think by discovering the waterfront he's discovering an empty depressing place in his mind where he has to live without this girl. i think the song began AFTER he broke up with the girl, and is about his struggle to completely free her from his life and mind, which in a sense the whole album is about (like the girl and his relationship with her and getting over her).. the beginning of the song "I will promise myself I won't care, distracting myself from your stare and I've seen this mistake once before, with your games I will never fall for" is him running into the girl somewhere after theyve broken up, where he thinks to himself how easy it would be to just take her back but he knows he cant. He also says after this "I've hung up my guns, I won't kill again" meaning he's done hurting himself and others by being with this girl. the chorus "i wont forget you, i'm not gonna let you win, but i'm tired of lying tired of fighting you and it's not gonna change" means that although he's determined to live without this girl in his life he's not going to forget the experience, because that would be letting her get away with all the shit she did; rather he's tired of dealing with her so he's not going to, but he won't let her win and simply be forgotten. also, the part that's like "You ask for my heart, you know that I'm down.. But not the way you lie to me, you tear it all apart and beg for me to say.. I sail off to sea, I'm not coming back" is about the girl tryign to make it seem like whatever she did doesnt matter because she "loves him" but all her actions do is depress him more and remind him of all her lies and how horrible all the shit she did made him feel, so hes sailing off in his mind to be depressed and alone, but the "im not coming back" is said with such spite it makes it sound like being depressed and alone is better than being with her the verse of "Counting down, make that sounds, And you know it makes no sense, Counting down, 'til you mess around And I know you can't ever change" is kind of just an extra insight into what the girl did to him. this part is kind of obvious, she cheats on everyone she's with and even though she claimed she really loved him she was unable to be faithful. He also says "When I'm trembling, Thrown overboard And I'm ready to relive the past" which means he won't deal with the emotional complications of this incident until he's completely removed her from his life, or entirely submerged in the waterfront (depressing empty part of his mind) so to speak. His rationalizations ("Pretend it's not forever, I'll pull myself together I'll say that I'll forget her, I'll breathe. And I'll say she never hurt me, And look at it as learning, And laugh about the good and the bad. Because I won't live forever We don't belong together, I know I'll feel better") for creating this place are my favorite part of the song because its sort of the things you tell yourself in order to cope with a relationship ending that don't really help because they're so much easier said then done. and the end note of "its not gonna change" i think is him saying that nothing will make him forgive and/or forget her. SORRY THIS IS SUCH A LONG POST!!
