| seems like he realized that he was living life the wrong way, thinking it was the the only way: "looking forward on paths", but "sideways" - the direction was wrong to begin with (maybe its the way he was taught by whoever "kissing families" represents) Things get so bad that he seems to momentarily contemplate suicide: "this could be the bitter end" but quickly decides against it. This is a hopeful song because he realizes what and why he was living a certain way. "Its no wonder that we did it this way" - you do what you know right? He does express remorse for the wasted time but more importantly sees the silver lining because whatever happened is finally over and he looks back and in completion sees how the mistakes/wasted time magically made sense (connected and beautiful) not sure its about a relationship, the ring can represent any union | |

| some of your lyrics are definitely wrong i think it's "And kissing families can be come a program to derail us all" simply because of one of past myspace headlines. unless you're absolutely sure you're right. In any event, this is a neat song, despite the obscure lyrics. And the music video rocks. | |

| Well, first, I agree that SSPU is a wonderful band. But I think this song is a lot darker than most of you seem to. To me, this song is about a young man who has been living through a hellish abusive family life, and has finally broken free. Evidence: Song title, after all, mentions Families. Items associated with children - string, rusty ring. "So what?" - infected wound (something children get commonly), but no one cares. Forgotten prison - sounds like many kids' homes. "Now I know just where I stand" - something a teenager might say after his parents lay down the law or even strike him. "bitter end, I know it won't" - I might finally be getting away from the abusive parent (moving out), but of course it won't really be the end since they're family. "thank god it's over" - Brian's voice in the last verse and especially this line are so filled with anger and anguish, and also relief at finally escaping. Also, if you watch the video, Brian has a very prominent black eye. I assume it's makeup, applied for the video. You have to ask yourself why he might have done that. Anyway, that's how I see it. And no, I'm not from an abusive family background myself. But this song still almost makes me cry like a little girl every time I hear it. | |

| Well, the lyrics on the silversunpickups website say "kissing families can't recall, a program to derail us all". I like how he realized that the whole world tends to "look forward" when there really is no forward, only "sideways paths". People never really progress, they just shift their details and fashions. And 'its no wonder we did it this way', since believing that things will be better is, of course, more beautiful. He seems to be accepting the fact that he's made what many people would call a 'mistake' by looking forward, and looking at everything as connected and beautiful. He knows where he stands, even if it's strange and even wrong. and he's thanking god that the struggle, or uncertianty is over, and that, at least in his mind, hearts are too close - which is a comfortable thing to loving people. He's accepted everything, instead of bothering about little things like cuts and crappy equipment. "so what?" I keep coming back to the "kissing families can't recall" section tho. The way I might take it is that there's something about incest (which I've heard can actually runs in families, genetically, when it's not abuse) that creates a maddness (something long associated with incest) that could and has, in the past, tried to "derail" or sidetrack the world. But they haven't recalled the "program" or system to do it, and so, we're safe for now. That's a little complicated..so..of course, I'm not sure.(I don't know if this has anything to do with the lyrics, but he made a slightly awkward joke about using a pickup line on his sister. *shrugs*) | |

| Oh, and I think the lyric is: "Well someone said I made a mistake" Which fits more with a kid who's been punished or abused. | |

| To me, the line 'infected wound from a rusted ring' could be a metaphor for a failed relationship. Rings can sometimes represent a relationship such as a wedding or engagement ring, so the rusted ring could be a metaphor for a broken or failed relationship. It is still affected and hurting the person, because of the 'infected wound'. | |

| I really like the video for this song. It seems pretty self-explanitory to me, I mean, I think I get the gist of it. Here's what I think: Maybe the writer is having a hard time in life, or maybe just a bad day. All those little things that go wrong (plastic mic, broken string, infected wound from a rusted ring) just add up and lead to bigger problems (Sideway paths). They're thinking about giving up, but then they realize that other people are/have/will be in the same position (Soon you'll be there too). They realize that it might feel like the end, but it will eventually pass (This can be the bitter end, I know it won't/ Thank God it's over) And so they take a look at their life, and see how all these things have lead them to where/who they are, how everything is connected (and beautiful), and how now they've finally figured out where, or who, they are. That's just what I think though. =] It's really a beautiful song. | |

| my favorite song by my favorite band=) I definately aggree with tiffa for me rusted ring means a relationship that lost it's sparkle over time, resulting in pain; "well some would say I've made a mistake kept looking forward on path sideways" I think that's about not giving up when the going gets tough, even when most would have called the quits. | |
