I know everyone has has already said it but I love this song. It is peaceful. I was going for a holiday down south (in Western Australia) and my parents and I were listening to the Greatest Hits c.d. It was nighttime and I just felt so relaxed and happy. One of the most beautiful songs-lyrically and musically- ever written.

This song is the heavenly Father talking to you. He loves you and will help you through whatever troubles that fall upon you. Just trust Him , that's all. No matter what you have done.

what's better than someone that will be there for you? not much. charlottle church does a cover of this song that, i thought, was very good. obviously a different style but great, nonetheless.

Well first of all, no, the the isn't about drugs, but you can pretend it is if that helps you like it, that's the beauty of a good song, it can have so many levels to it, and you can relate your life to it. Anyway, that loud sound the drum that enters in the middle of the song was made when engineer Roy Halee put a snare drum at the bottom of an elevator shaft, then placed a microphone at the top of the shaft. It gave that haunting deep echo sound of the snare. Wicked, eh?

this really is a wonderful song. so man people have speculated as to if it is about drugs or not and though i can see where they're getting that from i dont think its true at all...you could say that with pretty much any song, especially the poetic and metaphoric ones but its usually not the case. i do think it is a song about friendship but also in some respect a song about God. he is there for us as our bridge...or if not God specifically our faith. just turning to it when you need it can be like a strong friendship. what a classic.

i do hope you realize that he friend simon and garfunkel are talking about in this song is our good friend mr. HEROINE(sp?). notice the "sail on silver girl" part? heroine is silver when it enters the body...simon and garfunkel were genius composers. almost all of their songs have hidden meanings within them

I agree that this is a great song. . .but I don't think it has ANYTHING to do with drugs. . .it is all about friendship and to me the "silver girl" is a reference to a female friend of his. . .with all due respect to Harry in When Harry Met Sally. . .men and women CAN be friends and this is what this song is about to me. . .

I recall this song became a source of tension for Simon and Garfunkle. Simon wrote the lyrics, but it was determined that the song was too short. Garfunkle added the "silver girl" verse, and Simon hated it! He felt it had nothing to do with the rest of the song and besides, it made no sense! Still, they used it.

I agree...this song has been viewed so many times, but not a single comment has been made. This week, our high school choir did a version of this song arranged by Kirby Shaw. It was amazing. 2 of my good friends had solos for the second and third verses. It was absolutely beautiful, and they recieved a standing ovation. This song is so powerful and beautiful. This is how I feel about my best friend - I would do anything for her...no matter what she needs and I know she would do the same for me. I guess that's what having a best friend is all about.

Johnny Cash does it now too, it's plenty weird, but still very moving. I never thought about the lyrics when it came out, just that it was beautiful...and "I will lay me down", maybe vaguely that someone was laying down himself for someone else. But not long ago it struck me so forcefully that it seemed to be about Christ. Our bridge over troubled water. And even more, about us, being like "Christ" for each other, laying ourselves down for each other...and rooting for each other, sail on silver girl...a beautiful portrait of real Love.

when i first heard this song i didnt listen to the words, and based on the melody i fealt it as kind of a depressing song, and when it said "i will lay me down" i thought of kind of giving up. then i listened to the words and found the lyrics and it was not that at all...one of the best songs ever written, simple, but amazing. so moving. it can relate to everyone.

I'm so sick of everyone thinking that all songs have some secret drug meaning..the line "sail on silver girl" is NOT about heroin ... from the mouth of Paul Simon, "My girlfriend at the time was particularly saddened upon finding a few grey hairs in her brush, lamenting that she was getting older. I wrote that lyric as a tribute and inside joke to her. I don't know how the heroin connection rumor got started. The song is basically about friendship." ....played this song in hs band and i've always loved it..more so as time moves on..the music just gives me a happy little chill..lol....

Well, First of all. NO DRUGS! I am not an orgirnall fan, as in i wasnt born when they wrote this song. but i did have a tape of there greatest hits and i wore it out let me tell ya. but this song i have always loved. just hearing it a few minutes ago and really paying attention to the words made me think. ( i am not trying to preach or anything but) like shunammite kind a touched on. i really think this song is about one man who did lay his life down for us. Jesus.. listen to the words. It could be about a friend but with the line "When friends just can't be found" i really think it is mentioning somone else. jesus died for our sins, he laid down his life for us. he is there always for us, when we are moving right on by. Also in the 2nd "I will comfort you. I'll take your part." jesus took away our sins when he died for us. he took are place up there. But untill right before i posted this. i also thought it was a song about a dear friend (which i have used many times to help ppl) it sounds a little depressing, but it is a really nice and pleasent song.

this is possibly one of the best love songs ever written, because, unlike today's songs (I'm thinking of Hoobastank's "The Reason"), which are primarily focused on the self, this song is entirely about the other person, and how the singer would lay himself down for her, as an act of selfless sacrifice. I beleive this is the highest expression of love possible, and it is sung beautifully

I can't believe that in almost a YEAR, no one has written a comment on this amazing song about friendship and togetherness. This song epitomizes why we have friends... Because the real friends stick around when times are dark while the others scatter for a better view.
