This is my version of this wonderfully gorgeous song since I don?t like the version in
the guitar book. I
it?s more accurate to what the artist is really playing, so tell me what YOU think.

E 3---+---3---+---|5---+---5---+---|5---+---5---+---|3---+---3---+---|

And then right back to the filler/intro lick.

Words: (the chords are the same as the first verse for all verses except the end of the
second - D/C/G
of Gsus/D/G)

G C G Am Gsus C/F# D7/F#
I hear the drizzle of the rain, like a memory it falls
G D/F# G C Am Gsus D G
Soft and warm, continuing tapping on my roof and walls

G C G Am Gsus C/F# D7/F#
And from the shelter of my mind, Through the window of my eyes
G D/F# G C Am D C G
I gaze beyond the rain-drenched streets, To England where my heart lies

(Here?s where it goes to Dsus)

My mind?s distracted and diffused, my thoughts are many miles away

They lie with you when you?re asleep, and kiss you when you start your day

And a song I was writing is left undone I don?t know why I spend my time

Writing songs I can?t believe With words that tear and strain to rhyme

(Back to Dsus)

And so you see I have come to doubt All that I once held as true

I stand alone without beliefs The only truth I know is you

And as I watch the drops of rain Weave their weary paths and die

I know that I am like the rain There but for the grace of you go I

(Really cool guitar solo verse, which I may tab later...)

Note: At the end of the third line of each verse, there is a walkup from G to C that Paul Simon
loves to
(Homeward Bound, Boxer, etc...) and he alternates from the single note walk I put in
the tab at that spot
a more common (and cooler) walkup:

E ----------------|0---------------|----------------|----------------|
B ----0---1---3---|----------1-----|----------------|----------------|
G ----------------|------0-------0-|---etc...-------|----------------|
D ----------------|----2-------2---|----------------|----------------|
A --------0---2---|3---------------|----------------|----------------|
E 3---3---+---+---|+---+---3---+---|+---+---+---+---|+---+---+---+---|

Ah, sweet poetry... Love and beauty to all,

This tab is developed from the one by John Nimis. I don't claim it to be
better, but it's certainly a lot closer to the recorded version (on sound of
silence).

Lyrics:

(intro)

I hear the drizzle of the rain,
like a memory it falls,
soft and warm, continuing,
tapping on my roof and walls.

And from the shelter of my mind,
through the window of my eyes
I gaze beyond the rain-drenched streets,
to England where my heart lies.

(bridge)

My mind's distracted and diffused,
my thoughts are many miles away.
They lie with you when you're asleep,
and kiss you when you start your day.

And a song I was writing is left undone.
I don't know why I spend my time
writing songs I can't believe
with words that tear and strain to rhyme.

(bridge)

And so you see I have come to doubt
all that I once held as true.
I stand alone without beliefs.
The only truth I know is you.

And as I watch the drops of rain
weave their weary paths and die
I know that I am like the rain.
There but for the grace of you go I.

(solo verse)

It's sung so sweetly and earneslty about distanced love, it makes you actually feel the pain.

Paul Simon apparently wrote this about a woman he met while touring England. As love songs go, it is one of the best. More specifically, it is written for someone, just like George Harrison's "Something" and John Denver's "Annie's Song." Whoever Kathy is, she can be proud that Simon regards her as the "only truth" he knows. It is possibly the most profoud lines ever sung, in my opinion.

Kathy also appears in the song "America," riding the bus and hitchiking around the country with Simon.

I d like to tell an anecdote about this song. I had a girlfriend I met in Canada who was a foreign student. When she went back to Germany, I would think of her after I left work (say, around 1am for me, it was like 7am for her). So I would imagine saying good-morning to her and making breakfast. Anyway, time went by and one day, a friend of mine shows me this song and I connected to it immediately. I felt Simon wrote this song for all those people that have a love in the distance and I learned to play it on the guitar. Unfortunately, that "girlfriend" became ex.....bitch!

It conjures up images simply and lastingly. For some reason, I love every single line in this not-particularly-famous S&G song. Kathy was a fairly long-term girlfriend of Paul's, who lived in England, and she does also appear in the song 'America'. They're spilt up now, obviously, for years, but I bet it feels lovely to have two of what I think are some of the greatest songs ever written for you. The emotions in this are raw and powerful and quite glorious, and this is definitely an achievement for S&G (more obviously Simon, who wrote and performed this alone.)

He wrote this while in England actually he said that himself, and he just wrote in the perspective of a lost love but was actually dating Kathy at the time.

before paul & art really gained any recgnition in the US, they had been touring in europe for a while. while in london, they were both playing outside for kicks on the street during some evenings. a girl they were friendly with, named kathy would stand with them, and would frequently hold out a hat collecting money from passerbys.

This is one of the first S&G songs I really loved, after "Bridge Over Troubled Water". Compared to that song, "Kathy's Song" is simple, straightforward and expresses love in a subtle and wonderful way. As you listen to it, sometimes it seems more as if it's spoken, rather than sung. You can almost picture Paul speaking these lyrics to Kathy over the phone, across the sea.

"with words that tear and strain to rhyme" This is a line that actually does what it says. How does anyone, even a giant among songwriters like Simon, write a line like that? Think about it...

"I stand alone without beliefs The only truth I know is you." One of the best lines in a song, ever. Finding such a deep love but having to part -- an age-old occurrence made anything but trite.
