Simon and Garfunkel
Keep The Customer Satisfied (Simon)
-----------------------------------
Sounds OK with a capo on fret 1, using D, G, A7 shapes.
Played with a kind of shuffley blues rhythm.

Verse 1
-------
(B7b) Eb
Gee but its great to be back home

Home is where I want to be
Ab
I've been on the road so long my friend
Eb B7b
Ab
And if you came along I know you couldn't disagree

Chorus
------
Eb
It's the same old story

Ab Eb B7b
Every where I go, I get slandered, libelled
Eb Ab
I hear words I never read in the bible
Eb Ab
And I'm one step ahead of the shoe shine
Eb Ab
Two steps away from the county line
Eb Ab Eb B7b
Just trying to keep my customer satisfied, satisfied

Verse 2 (As before)
-------
Deputy sheriff said to me
"Tell me what you come here for, boy
You better get your bags and flee
Your in trouble boy and now you're headed into more"

Last Chorus
-----------
Eb
It's the same old story

Ab Eb B7b
Every where I go, I get slandered, libelled
Eb Ab
I hear words I never read in the bible
Eb Ab
And I'm so tired
Eb Ab
I'm oh oh oh so tired
Eb Ab Eb B7b
Just trying to keep my customers satisfied, satisfied

It's probably about anal sex. Most songs are.

Yeah, so jolly and vibrant. Love the voices, the lyrics and the trumpets (!) but I have to ask: what the hell does 'one step ahead of the shoe shine, two steps away from the county line' mean? I've wracked my brains!

Pot makes so much more sense than what I always thought. I've loved this song since I was little, but as I got older and listened to the lyrics more, I just figured it was about prostitution. Selling pot is a much better explanation.

nobodys commented on this??? i LOVE this song its sooo jolly hee great for driving home . ive only just thought about what it means, could be how everywhere he goes hes always trying to please everyone and everyones watching him, trying to get him in trouble but when hes at home none of this happens, hence the 'home is where i wanna be' he feels way mor comftable? could be the pressures of fame? dont no but it makes me smile everytime i hear it and all the instrumentation is fab too including the trumpets at the end-an instrument just made to be laughed at :D.

i figure, knowing the times, acid is a very high possibility as well. they bothsorta alternated on which was the most taboo.

The lines about shoe shine and the county line always suggested to me this song was about selling dope. "One step ahead of the shoe shine" i thought means close to being absolutely broke, and having to shine shoes, whereas "two steps away from the county line" means he's always close to the border in case he gets busted. Who knows?

This is totally about selling weed. The "keep the customer satisfied" is a justification for what the singer is doing. He sees it as just doing a service for others, why is "the man" always on his back about it? Very poetic in typical Paul Simon fashion.

I love this song! I love the array of instruments, too! This song, I bealieve, talks about someone being a drug dealer. It says,"Deputy Sheriff said to me Tell me what you come here for, boy. You better get your bags and flee. You're in trouble boy, And you're heading into more." & Like StephenDrew00 said. Soo yeah...
