Song: The Only Living Boy In New York
Artist: Simon And Garfunkel

| I adore this song; I can't listen to it without seeing the scene from Garden State it features in. After listening to the GS soundtrack all summer on buses, in parks etc it's got the feeling of summer in it for me too. It's not a taxing song, but the simplicity never fails to make me happy. You sometimes feel like you're that last one that notices the little things, and this perfectly sums it up. And fits so perfectly with that scene, and that kiss and that scream. | |

| this song, to me, is about that feeling when you're alone in the world and you wonder if there will ever be anyone who understands you. someone to mirror your heart. someone to love. i don't know what every line means, but i sure know that feeling. | |

| one thing i don't understand is if paul was sad about art going to mexico and leaving him behind alone, then why would he say "i got nothing to do today but smile" ? wouldn't he be upset or something? | |

| going along with what everyone else said about him writing this song for Art being away...the line: "I can gather all the news I need on the weather report" is funny to me b/c when i look at the weather, i always look at all the cities where i know people and see how the weather is there. it's kind of peaceful to me, like you know how they're doing almost. | |

| This is such a great song. If you can take out the New York part, this can apply to many situations. I do live in New York so it seems to ring more. Every single time he says: The only living boy in New Yooork... The only living boy in New York. I always think he's about to add in City. But he never does. ^_^ | |

| In reference to Garden State, i thought it was kind of intentional to use this song as the way New York is sung, sounds a bit like Newark (near/or where Andrew Largemans family house is) :\ | |

| "half of the time we're gone but we don't know where / and we don't know here" this song does it for me -- everywhere. driving through the rain, baking out in the sun, sitting inside staring at my wall, snuggling close to anyone...it always fits and it always feels right. half of the time i wonder if i'm the only one in the world left with any kind of soul. | |

| the worst part is that paul was cast in the film catch-22 as well, but at the last moment he was cut out of it, and was left alone. filming ran three months over, too, and delayed the recording of "bridge over troubled water." | |

| When i got the garden state soundtrack i must admit i skipped this song and never played it. I was retarded. I then saw the movie and saw how it fitted in with the movie and the scene i just fell in love with...and i was wondering what the song was during the scene. Then it went "the only living boy in new york.." and i could of just died. THIS IS WHAT I HAD BEEN MISSING OUT ON?! Gorgeous song. I listen to it before i have to go to school. It calms me down and i don't even have to worry about what is going to happen today or any day ahead of when this song finishes. THIS is why i love music. | |

| Paul Simon wrote this as a thinly-veiled message to Art Garfunkel, referring to a specific incident where Art went down to Mexico to act in The film Catch-22. Paul was left alone in NY, hence the lonely feelings of "the only living boy". From their last album before the breakup, _Bridge Over Troubled Water_. | |

| this song is to art when he went to mexico, but the situation fits other situations too. to me, it's about parting ways (in a good light) with someone you care about - this is a goodbye song. "get your plane right on time/i know your part'll go fine" - even though we're not together, i know you'll do fine in whatever you do, and i wish you the best of luck "i get the news i need on the weather report" - we no longer speak, but i still hear about/ask about you through the 'grapevine' "i've got nothing to do today but smile" - this line just captures happiness, the realization that though we are no longer together, celebrate the happy times we had (and to know that more happy times with others are in the future) "i know you've been eager to fly now/hey, let your honesty shine, shine, shine" - they are growing apart and admitted it to each other (honestly) true, "the only living boy in new york" line doesn't really fit.. but i take comfort in the others. :) | |
