F Dm
There is freedom within, there is freedom without
Bb A
Try to catch the deluge in a paper cup
F Bb
There's a battle ahead, many battles are lost
Bb
But you'll never see the end of the road
A
While you're traveling with me

Bb C
Hey now, hey now
F Dm
Don't dream it's over
Bb C
Hey now, hey now
F Dm
When the world comes in
Bb C
They come, they come
F Dm
To build a wall between us
Bb C
We know they won't win

Now I'm towing my car, there's a hole in the roof
My possessions are causing me suspicion but there's no proof
In the paper today tales of war and of waste
But you turn right over to the T.V. page

Now I'm walking again to the beat of a drum
And I'm counting the steps to the door of your heart
Only shadows ahead barely clearing the roof
Get to know the feeling of liberation and relief

Hey now, hey now
Don't dream it's over
Hey now, hey now
When the world comes in
They come, they come
To build a wall between us
Don't ever let them win.

Although it's themes are applicable to many situations, I agree with fnugget. This song appears to be about the Berlin Wall. "There is freedom within, there is freedom without Try to catch the deluge in a paper cup" The song begins optimistically, for it's overall message is optimistic. These lines claim that despite the war, freedom still exists, so much, in fact, that it can be compared to a waterfull flooding a paper cup. The cup will break, just like how the reign of opressors will eventually break as long as the innocents remain hopeful. "There's a battle ahead, many battles are lost But you'll never see the end of the road While you're traveling with me" The narrator of this song is arguable the voice of hope. Thus, these lyrics encourage that no matter how many battles are won or lost, the good will never lose the war so long as they don't lose hope. "Hey now, hey now Don't dream it's over Hey now, hey now When the world comes in They come, they come To build a wall between us We know they won't win" The words "hey now" bring listeners to attention, as well as console them. It was catastrophic for families and loved ones to be separated by the Berlin Wall. "When the world comes in to build a wall between us" suggests how diplomacy failed, and Germany was split. In spite of this tragedy, the song's narrator urges the people to keep their spirits up, for they and their loved ones will meet again when the world has quieted. "Now I'm towing my car, there's a hole in the roof My possessions are causing me suspicion but there's no proof In the paper today tales of war and of waste But you turn right over to the T.V. page" These next lines seem to compare two lifestyles. The first is from the perspective of a citizen that has seen the madness of war, for her car has been destroyed in a battle. It was most likely hit by bullets, schrapnel, or a nearby bomb, etc. The possessions are suspicious possibly because their number is dwindling, i.e. someone stole from the narrator. Destruction and thieving in order to survive are two sad outcomes of war, and these conditions are juxtaposed to a citizen that is comfortable and unaffected by the war. He blocks world crisises from his mind and instead pursues cheap entertainment. It's an irony. "Now I'm walking again to the beat of a drum And I'm counting the steps to the door of your heart Only shadows ahead barely clearing the roof Get to know the feeling of liberation and relief" The beat of the drum reasserts the presence of the war, as do the shadows of airplanes swooping close to the ground. Though drums and planes are normally signs of destruction and battle, they are also the harbingers of glorious things - freedom, liberation. As the drums beat, the heroine of the song marches proudly to meet her love. What once frightened her has made her strong. She has caught sight of the things that no war can steal unless we submit - the hope and love that the human heart is capable of. "Hey now, hey now Don't dream it's over..." The message has been made and the song completes itself, leaving its listeners to embrace the worth hope. Maybe this is not what the artist intended, but I thought it was a good guess. :)

For those that didn't know, this song is a remake. Crowded House did the original in the 80's. Neil Finn of Crowded House wrote the song.

I didn't know they were a Christian band.. but any song can be about God. I always thought it was kind of a happy song.. I guess it's kind of sad but it makes me feel happy. I thought it was like when something ends, maybe like a relationship, but it still lives on and you can still enjoy it. It reminds me of that quote.. don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened.

a song about God, perhaps. Sixpence none the richer are a Christian band, I believe the song was originally done by crowded house, who I think also had Christian leanings. Freedom is provided by God, freedom inside, but Christianity may restrict you from doing something else, denying freedom without, in theory. Deluge in a paper cup, perhaps this is referring to when the samaritan woman said to Jesus, "even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from the masters table." The next bit im not sure on, perhaps it is about the state of the world, battles. The last line of the first verse is still a mystery to me. Chorus, just cos u make a mistake and walk with the world dont mean ur relationship with God is over, the enemy will try to set up a wall between us anf God, but we musn't let him suceed. I agree with linara about the next verse. After this we step out and march on with God, towards his heart for us, what he desires for us, and the liberation and relief provided by it. Maybe wrong, just my ideas.

Good interpretation asleepandawake. I can see your reasoning. I didn't immediately think of the Berlin Wall. I could see it was historical, especially the line "In the paper today, tales of war and of wage", you can see it's kind of saying 'yeah, crap is going on in the world' but your more formal interpretation is MUCH better than mine. Lol. And Crowded House cannot be beaten. Even the music is better. I don't know the technicalities of music so I can't name what it is but listen to the opening of each song and you'll see what I mean. Plus, the 'House's version just has more meaning to me. Go NZ for such a great band! (I swear I'm not biased; I'm Australian!) SO glad they're back together now! Sorry for going on about CH on a Sixpence page. Woops.

rtil:While this is not a bad version, I'm afraid I'll have to disagree with you on this one. Crowded House's version has never been bettered :)

I agree that oftentimes SNTR's cover versions of songs like Crowded House's"Don't Dream It's Over" are pretty good--but it seems that SNTR does a lot of covers without considering what direction their versions will be going--as both the reg. alternative and adult alt. stations I listen to never play their material, does it just get targeted for the Christian alt./pop audiences seeking music with "safe" lyrics? Perhaps the Lord needs to take SNTR into another direction, such as making their own original music with more focus on lyrical content befitting their own faith values, thus better showcasing the musical beauty of their songs. I say amen. =)
