To answer Billco about the last paragraph, I think the 'other man' hasn't expressed his intentions yet to the girl he's getting along so well with. I think he's hitting it off so well with the girl, that he's driving a wedge between her and her bf, because he has a connection with her that she doesn't have with her bf. Even though the bf may be a stand-up a guy and all, that doesn't matter because they are falling apart because of him. At this point, even if the 'other man' were to keep his distance, the damage he caused is already done, and the girl and her bf's relationship falling apart would be 'happenin' anyway'. The girl may not be totally aware that she's fallen for the 'other man', but he knows that he better confess his intentions to her soon because her bf is going to put two and two together soon enough.

Specifically this song is about Chris Murphy's relationship with Leslie Fiest of Broken Social Scene, Fiest, By Divine Right fame. She was going out with one of the guys from Broken Social Scene, Kevin perhaps? Anyway, obviously exploring the point of view of Chris as the "Other Man". A very good song, especially exploring the other side of things, being the cheater. It really shows that things are more complex than black and white. Society always paints the "Other Man" as a bad guy, which is pretty unfair.

This song is my personal favourite of sloan. This is due to its great tune but also lyrics. I've been seeing a girl for about a year, and I'm not the other man but i fear him coming along. Like the song says "he knows you're gonna drift apart and there's nothing he can say i know that he's a stand up guy but that's none of my concern" Possible the most agonising lyric i've heard as i fear this will happen.

I'm in this exact situation right now, and it is the hardest thing I have ever had to be a part of in my entire life. I don't want to be an also, or be the bad guy, or the other man, it's just happening. It just gets to the point of no return and well decisions have to be made right? I think the last part talks about the rumors of you and this girl having an affair or cheating or whatever and the other man has to figure it out before her husband/b/f does so you can bail or leave or do the right thing whatever the case may be.
