Tomorrow Tomorrow - Elliott Smith
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tabbed by: underrated
Email: mattconnellan@yahoo.com
Tuning: Drop D (D A D G B E)
This entire song is picked very quickly, and he accents alternate notes, making
it sound half as fast as it is. Plus he has a lot of hammer-ons in between
the alternate note picking. This one isn't easy, folks.

| Once again, he repeats his favorite alliteration "deaf and dumb and done." And there's obviously some personal meaning to the phrase that, sadly, we're never going to know. Retrospectively, I see most Elliott Smith songs predicting his own death. In this, I see him speaking in second person regarding himself. Death imagery as always: "drown tomorrow out". Self-abuse: "called your failures art." (Perhpas the line that most pointedly fingers Elliott referring to himself...who else would he refer to as a failure but himself?) | |

| i'm fairly sure 'straight to over' is a british construction that means 'right over to.' as in, 'proceed straight to over the corner of 5th and broadway.' my apologies if there is no 5th and broadway. i'm from ohio and as such have no knowledge of real cities.Edited by mellow_harsher on April 3 2007, at 07:35PM | |

| I agree with Snevik. I always thought that he was kind of referring to himself, in a way, with this song. I'm probably wrong, though. I guess we'll never know? | |

| i got static in my head the reflected sound of everything tried to go to where it led but it didn't lead to anything the noise is coming out, and if it's not out now, i know it's just about to drown tomorrow out I always thougth that last bit was a clear statement about suicide. The noise i think represents a shotgun blast. | |

| I think this song (among quite many) are great metaphors for the state in his mind. This album was written after he had gone to rehab and cleaned up. This song seems to tie to his thirst for heroin while his friends & family want him to stay clean "nobody wants to see you inside of me" and the apathetic life style brought on from being a junkie. The line about the static refers to being high and living in euphoria but finding out it didn't do anything at all. Oh well, tomorrow will come and hopefully things will change. | |

| I think this song is Elliott singing about himself from an outside perspective. The people that he doesn't want inside himself are his mum and step-dad, because he doesn't like them. Perhaps they once called him 'failures art' and this has obivously affected him to the point where he thinks it might be true. Instead though he says that tomorrow (ie the future) will prove them wrong as his music becomes widely respected. Awesome song. | |

| actually, upallnight, Elliott loved his mother. Waltz #2 is about her, as well as "Pretty Mary K" and some other songs by him. waltz #2(the original version) included the lyrics "mom, I love you" and still includes "xo, mom" in it. so I doubt he's talking about his mother trying to get inside his head. I agree with newmonkey also. | |

| i know firsthand that "static" doesn't have to be metaphorical. i think when he says "...i know it's just about to drown tomorrow out" that he is still talking about the static. after a while, you're detached from most everything. to the point where you really have no tomorrow. to the point where it really doesn't matter. 1 2 Next | |

| One of my favorite songs. . .I think that the guy in the song is coping with a friend's suicide and is frustrated with the hypocrisy of the people around him. It also seems like everyone fears for his mental health now, but they didn't care about him or the friend before the death. I think he's also scared that the static in his head will never end, and he'll end up just like the deceased. Listen to this song and then read Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky-- they go perfectly together. | |

| "I got static in my head, the reflected sound of everything/Tried to go to where it lead but it didn't lead to anything." I always took this as he was unable to make sense of his surroundings and happenings; he was unable to put the pieces to life's puzzle together and make sense of it all, so he's just left with static; white noise; he couldn't make any connections or see any harmonies. I think when he says it's "coming out" and "if it's not out now I know it's just about to drown tomorrow out" he's saying that he knows if he doesn't start to put the pieces together, he's going to get lost in the frustration and not be able to take advantage of his future. | |

| I agree with Snevik and Lloyd. it seems that he's talking about suicide. "called you failures art?" "called your failures art?" i think they both sound sad, and beautiful. either/or, it's a great song. | |

| I think the 'static' line is the heroin in his head. 'The reflected sound of everything'- clearly immersed in the potent drug. But the drug is uninspiring and doesn't 'lead to anything', pointless, like the perception of his life. Did he take crack as a substitue/prolonging of suicide? 'The noise is coming out', i agree that it is probably a gun. If he doesn't kill himself now, he can drown tomorrow out with drugs instead. Like if I'm having a bad week I will drown tomorrow out with a heavy drinking session. Escapism/Intoxication. Fascinating. | |
