for some reason i am now reminded of his song 'amity' in which he is talking about a girl he liked who in the song he says 'cause you laugh and talk and make my world rock' which reminds me of the first line in this song.. and also, he had said about amity that it was simply about someone wanting to be with someone, but they couldnt because they were too depressed or too addicted to whatever it may be, that they couldnt handle a serious relationship.. to me this song is a more in depth version of that song, lyrically.. it reminds me of the same situation.

Actually, I think this song, like many Elliott Smith songs, are about addiction. The 'somebody' he is referring to isn't a girl, but rather the drugs/alcohol that he abuses. So basically the song is Elliott admitting to his partner that he can't carry on a relationship because of his problems. I particulalry like the lines where he is speaking as the girl: "I could make you smile if you stayed awhile but how long will you stay with me baby?" Clearly, whoever Elliott was speaking about in this song recognized that he might take his own life. Anyway, great song.

I think this song is a second thought; reconsidering taking his life. He can see something that is beautiful, whether that be drugs or a woman and it makes him reconsider taking his own life.

why do you presume all his songs are about drugs?

Maybe I wasn't clear. Yes he is talking to a girl in the song, but the "somebody" he is speaking of are the drugs or his addiction. But, again it's all really about what the song means to you.

i agree good call! it IS call/response. i don't think it's about drugs because 1)his addiction songs are usually rough and 2) he uses the word "drugs" in the song. if he's talking about his rship with drugs throughout the whole song, it doesn't make sense that the drugs are telling him "those drugs you got won't make you feel better" because that's basically saying that the drugs are telling him "I am not going to make you feel better" and clearly, the person he's singing about does make him feel good. i really think he was writing about a girl. also he says "if i went with you i'd disappoint you too" i don't think a human can disappoint drugs (and yes i realize im taking this word for word and you could apply whatever philosophical meaning you want. but elliott usually accounts for plausability.) Finally, he'd been clean for over a year...I think a lot of this album really is NOT about drugs (From a basement...) but its so easy to look at every song as "OH THIS IS ABOUT DRUGS" i think he got out a lot of his addiction stuff on past albums, between memory lane, twilight, and fond farewell (as well as others im sure, i havent heard them all yet) it seems like he was trying to talk about something OTHER than drugs on this album. i think he wanted to accomplish a different arena. i think on this album he is more obvious about where he's talking about drugs. like in king's crossing he says "i got a date with a rich white lady" stuff like that. of course, just mho (my humble opinion)

both of them are in relationship's that they're not completely happy in, and they're in love, but being together might eventually ruin what they have, so it's best to keep the novelty of what they have instead.

this song really gets what being an adult is...our relationships are not perfect and we sacrifice to keep them, and they define us...The sample instrumental at the break is melancholy defined...this is an honest and truly beautiful song...a perfect moment in time.

And it's Twilight, this magical time. Is it the begining of the day, or the ending of the night? When you get to see the twilight it's always after something special, different time in your life or an event. I agree with most of you, you gave me a new wonderfull prespective on this song.

Best song ever. It's such a shame that Elliott had to go, he helped so many people, including myself, through his music. The fact that he feels the same way I do, makes me feel a little better.

Like Elliott has said in a couple interviews; most songs can be based about drugs, but alot of them have deeper meaning. Anybody can write a song about drugs, and Elliott has, a few of them, alot of them very good too, but although it might sound like it's about drugs, I don't think it is. This is most likely about a relationship where it's not working for one partner, or both, and he doesnt want to be a part of that person, even if he is in love with her.

Its pretty clear that he is talking with a girl about his drug "relationship" and how he feels he will let her down, and is discouraging her. But she clearly won't let go. And at the end, he realizes how late its gotten (after stating an absolutely gorgeous compliment, "because your candle burns so bright, well I almost forgor it was twilight), and can't discuss it anymore. While he then goes on to say how amazing she is "youre wonderful, its beautiful", his decision in the end is obvious as he continues to reiterate that he is taken. Damn that white lady. Miss you elliott

he was clean for a long time when he recorded this masterpiece, if he wrote it when he was still battling it then that would make sense, but i dont think he did. Its a true star-crossed love song. I think people automatically assume all his songs are about drugs, but really they may have references but he was trying to move forward from that with this album, he said his part on addiction on previous albums - at least give him that respect.

I agree with AccidentProne, I think when he says he's "already somebody's baby" he's saying he belongs to drugs. A lot of times people refer to heroin or whatever drug they do as their first love, and I think that's the connection he's making in this song. The girl wants to be there for him, and he knows it, but he also has already resigned himself to the fact that drugs are his first love. The girl he's talking to says: i'm nice to you i could make it through that you're already somebody's baby She wants to try to save him, or at least somehow be a comfort to him. She tells him she's willing to put up with his addiction. But he responds with: and if i went with you i'd disappoint you too He doesn't want to get involved with her because he knows that his drug addiction will only hurt her in the end.

Such a good song - I think the meaning is there, even though I feel ignorant saying that. It's about two people, already being in other relationships, but finding eachother refreshing and considering the possiblity of being together, yet knowing it's wrong and finding reasons to deny themselves' of it.

Definitely a relationships song. Looking for a drugs connection is an easy option but in this case I think it's wrong to do so. This has easily been my favourite song the past six months. Every time I play it, I shut down everything around me and become absorbed in it's beauty. It's a song I know I will still love 60 years from now. I can't wait to introduce my own children to Elliott Smith one day.

I always kind of saw this song as a call/response, as far as the first verse/chorus and second verse/chours go. The first is Elliott speaking to this other person, saying that they're glad to be with them, but he's already somebody's baby. The second is this person saying back, saying that they care about them and they could get through the fact that he's taken. The third verse is Elliott replying, even if this other person could be right, he's too tired to even try. He's already somebody's baby, and even if he went with this person he'd disappoint them. The somebody could very well be drugs, but could also be another person. There isn't enough evidence to support either theory, or disprove it. Both make sense, though.l
