In the States--this is definately the Smith's Big Song. I was just coming out at the time and I hated the gay life so I retreated into the underground club scene and this song was singing my life. I'd go to a gay bar and feel alone and scared and lonely. I remember distinctly feeling like straight people thought we weren't human and didn't know that we wanted to love another person just like they did. Then when I went out to gay bars I saw all the promiscuity and predatory behaviour and I knew I'd never find anybody worth a damn in those places. Now that I'm a grown up I don't feel like that at all and have had great relationships, but at thetime "How Soon is Now" summed it all up.

This is the "Charmed" theme song, except it's performed by the band Everclear.

i think Soho sampled Johnny Marr's grinding guitar part for their 1990 hit "Hippychick". if not "Panic", this must be their signature choon! this song sounds to me like the narrator is defending his life's decisions (to his parents? girlfriend?). spectacular.

One of the most powerful songs I have ever heard, that contains one of the best lyrics the music world has ever seen - "You shut your mouth! How can you say I go about things the wrong way? I am human and I need to be loved just like everybody else does." Awesome!!

tada123, what the hell are you on and where can i get some i don't think this is necessarily a song about gays (although it could be). it seems more about isolation and frustration. i'm sure many ppl can relate to that plus, not only Tatu covering this. Perhaps even worse: Avril. Her version is on the radio now after playing it, apparently, in heaps o concerts. Lame-o. wow little avril got some underground street cred for listening to and covering that big ole hush-hush 80s band the smiths. i hope she chokes on her tie.

because they're lesbians. its their only claim to fame since we all know they can't sing. this society is controlled by sex, whether openly or subliminal, and for some reason its glorified to be lesbian but immoral to be gay.

I am with BobC. This song is about being gay and trying to deal with people's criticism and judgement and trying to meet someone who can love you. But of course everyone can relate. That's why the Smiths are so great - their songs, while talking specifically about the gay experience a lot of times, can apply to everyone's experience.
