Hello, I tabbed this out a long time ago, but as anyone who saw
it will know, it was hard to follow. I've given up trying to
follow the words with the music. Just keep time with the bass
line (which is a simplky 4/4) and if you can get the music
together then the lyrics should come easy. I have plenty of
other Smiths tab around (most, if not all, can be found on
ftp sites), but feel free to bug me if you cant find something
you want. Also feel free to bug me about anything Smiths related,
about this tab, or just to beg me to join your band :)

repeat that one more time. Since the words dont go exactly with the
music the way one might suspect, the But we... part starts at the end
of the second time (the But starts at the G#m) so the cannot cling
part is where the next part enters... confused? Just listen to the
song a bit and try to follow along). This next part also serves
as the bridge after verse 4...

Ok, again since the lyrics are odly places over the music, the
Does the body rule starts with Does on the second to last bass note.

It then goes back through the songs for each verse like that.

To endm, do the intro and end on C#m

i think when he means that he is "still ill", the illness being "love", or "in love", that special feeling.

Songs mean different things to different people, rather than focusing on what the author was thinking when the song was written think about what the song means to you...

Totally feeling the Thatcherism/punk/ side of the argument here, but also the relationships. He was more than a lonely depressive about relationships, I think its more alluding to them as metaphors. perhaps the mind of the hopeless romantic sees everythings in those terms? dunno, thats just an idea to throw out. More a description of sentimentality perhaps? how the way we think about different situations are actually pretty similar. In this case its that once a change has been made its there for ever, you can never forget it, something fundamental has been revealed that you never realised before. Be it the end of the cosy post war period the punk/thatcherism/individualism era signalled, or wanting to go back to someone you've lost IE does the body rule the mind, can i overcome my subconscious thoughts about what the change means. Am I Still Ill - are my feelings corrupt noe that they dont fit in anymore? Why dont I fit in to this new world? Incapacity benefit, for which many of the pople were simply pushed on to when their illnesses would never previously have stigmatized them as. As wide ranging as ever.

the lyric 'we cannot cling to the old dreams anymore' strikes me as being terribly sad and nostalgic.

This is such a beautiful song. I love the "Ask me why and I'll spit in your eye" part. *sigh*

actually it reminds me of this venue in worcester, a town near where i live. there was a place called the void, which was a rock/punk etc venue for under 18s. it was magical, i've got really happy memories of being there. but then they had to change venues and the magic is gone, the people are different. and i keep clinging to the memories of the old void, but i know it won't ever be the same again.

For Morrissey this is a very personal song - the "iron bridge" referring to a haunt very near where he lived. The fact that "we cannot cling to the old dreams anymore" represents a realisation that those dreams will never come true. And what is the mystery illness? Love? Well, maybe, but the fact that the protagonist ends up with "sore lips" suggests there is an underlying problem, that kissing doesn't provide the satisfaction it could - perhaps then the illness is never finding satisfaction.

I read somewhere that this song was about his thoughts on the punk era and how it was hard to hold onto those values.

I love his voice, there is such beauty and longing in it. The desperation is haunting in it's innocent simplicity. There is also such lecherous wit (as always!) to the tune that male or female it's impossible not to swoon when his voice writhes out of him.

first off it's so important to note the lyrics vs. the music. music is so peppy, lyrics so sad. i love the irony, very clever (much like reel around the fountain, sad music, shallow lyrics). the past is gone and he can't get it back, and not only sad about it but i think a little pissed as well.

I love how the "i dunno" part just fades. Good phrasing on his voice- really makes the lyrics just that much more effective.
