this is one of my all time favourites. what makes it even sadder is that he says ' do you see me when we pass' which suggests to me that the person whom he desperately loves does not even know he exists... thats the killer and also what makes it so pathetic...

This song, more than any other, hits so very close to home. Some would say "I know It's Over" is much harder to listen to, but having thought of myself as charming, clever or entertaing, I can much more feel the pain of unreqited, even unnoticed, love. I think they know one another - the plea to keep him in mind suggests as much - but that she is oblivious to his love. At a certain point, afaid of losing the other as even a friend, he makes the "last stand" and masks those feelings as well as he can. Yet, he wonders...when she looks at me, is that brave mask all she sees?

this song probably links with half a person in the way of being in love with someone and them not caring. plus moz said that half a person is basd on his life and he was in love with a girl for 6 years so he probably based a few songs on her

delial is right. I think this song can be relatedto any kind of lost in love. The lover can also be dead.

Indescribably sad this one, this seems to be the fierce last stand of his attempt to force his will and his love on another person. I kinda get the sense too that his is a love that is not responded to or welcomed. the possibility that he might be remembered at least is the only thing keeping him slightly alive. so sad tears well up in my heart every time.

Following on from jobriath's reference to Elizabeth Smart, 'Do you hear me when you sleep?' is (almost) the last line of Smart's 'By Grand Central Station I Sat Down And Wept' (it actually reads 'Do you hear me WHERE you sleep' in the book, I don't know if that's what the line actually should be in this song). Beautifully prosaic read, incidentally, I'd recommend it. The book's about a love triangle, although I don't think that's relevant; the 'unrequited love' interpretation is probably nearer the mark, though I could be wrong.

Probably one of my favourite Smiths songs. The haunting vocals and heart reaching melody never fail to lift me into sweet melancholy.

Yeah. If I was an actor I would listen to this or "Asleep" before doing a crying scene, . So sad.

gasping - dying - but somehow still alive this is the final stand of all i am thank God for elizabeth smart, urging young morrissey on to write these words down and toy with the idea of throwing them into a song with a beautiful melody. please don't forget me, keep me in mind. oh how wish they would look back on us like we do them when we sit in our room and play this song over and over, tossing and turning in our bed, wiping the tears from our face, hoping the world would just swallow us and forget us. but they can't forget us. our obsession musn't forget us. please keep us in mind. keep us in mind. oh God, it's raining outside.

This song never fails to make me teary-eyed. Beautiful music, and Morrissey singing mellifluously about unrequited love...the kind of thing that made the Smiths great.

i don't even see this as a love thing anyway, to me it's a very close relationship suddenly falling apart, and you desperately want things to be good again, but the other person won't even speak to you anymore...you don't know what went wrong, and all you can do is hope somehow they still think of you, because maybe if they keep you in mind, they'll come back someday to set things right again.

Delial hit it on the head for me. This song reminds me of the peiod after a relationship ended for me about 4 years ago. it's really hard for me to listen to this song withouth becoming very emotional. it makes me feel like im up in some storm clouds just before it's about to rain in the middle of the night.
