Various1, why would he write "on the t-hut" just to make it rhyme? "When I see her" fit much better and are obviously correct.

This is a superb song that many, including me, can relate to. However, I think this song may be a little darker in tone than the consensus here. Nobody has yet mentioned the obsessive/stalking allusions in the first line 'I broke into your house last night'. On the surface it is about a guy who gets shy and tongue-tied around a girl he likes (who doesn't), but there is definitely a hint of obsession running through this song. In three of the four verses he mentions writing letters or notes (I assume to the same girl) but most tellingly, in the chorus he says 'Little peace of mind that I know better / than the plain disgrace of all my letters'. This shows that he knows what he is doing is wrong, but possibly can't help himself. We can only guess whether or not he has actually sent those letters. Another sign of obsession is deifying the girl - in this case calling her perfect in the second verse. Floodgates hold back floodwaters in a river etc. and when they are opened, they let forth an explosion of water. It is commonly used (as it certainly is in this case) as a metaphor for an unchecked outpouring of emotion. Also, the lyric is almost certainly 'my head's up with the birds when I see her' - you can hear it better in the coda. The confusion probably comes from the Irish pronunciation of 'her' as 'hur'.

This song sums up my life..... Me being the shy kid in highschool who doesn't have the courage to talk to the girl i like.... "I find it easier to sit and stare Than push my limbs out to you right there My heart is bursting in your perfect eyes As blue as oceans and as pure as skies " Love that part.......explains everything

i thought the floodgates meaning was that he gave up on that girl, but then any girl who talked to him he fell in love with but yeh your meaning makes a lot more sense

Weird this song, I think I first heard it when I was working at school & there was this guy there & I was really shy towards him, but he got my e-mail address & I was talking like that fine. So I understand the I'm too shy to speak to you at school bit although he doesn't mean it in this way... I took the floodgates as crying because in the UK we say 'here come to floodgates' so it may mean that he started to cry in front of her? & then everybody looked at him & he fell in love with them all? I think a t-hut is like a bird house thing or maybe a tree, it may be like a smilie of being 'high in the sky' or whatever...? That's what I think anyway.

i think the floodgates is referring to that feeling of euphoria, when something great happens, or when you finally connect with someone you have wanted for a long time, and nothing goes wrong in the world, and everything seems beautiful.

Yeah I get the idea that after he got the courage to talk to her he then felt the whole world open up to him. He then wasn't so preoccupied with the one girl, "take your time...," I see the last two verses as a backing off after he's gained confidence in himself, I could be wrong but that's my take.
