I love how Gary Lightbody can turn even a Christmas song into a just-short-of-depressing love offering. He's anxious to get home to repair a relationship he's screwed up. He's prepared to do anything this girl wants him to no matter how embarassing or seemingly emasculating. I like the desperation of the lyrics. It's amusing how he tries to convince her she misunderstood him when he confessed love for someone else but insists he actually only wanted to hold her hand. I don't buy that. I don't think she would either. I feel sort of bad for him since he's so earnest, but I'm left to wonder if he really wants her back or just doesn't want to be all alone on Christmas... I adore this tune. The sleigh bells jingling in the background are just perfect.
