this song a lot to me. no overreating when i say a lot. "And the wings that you burn turn to ashes my dear And ashes just fall to the ground" ahh, those lines are so powerful for me. i reckon that this song is comparing us, and our emotions to ashes - maybe, making a point that we are, as well as our emotions, nothing. we are ashes, we are dirt, eventually everything will mean nothing. although on a personal note, burning something beautiful, take, the wings for example, end up being something insignificant. i duno, to me, i imagine an angel, with her wings on fire, and, in the end, that angel, so beautiful and fragile, is now part of the dirt, the ground that we walk all over i don't know if that made any sense, but i have a specific reason for my obsession with this song. and, maybe, the wings symbolise the relationship this song may be revolving around.. the girl, throwing the once beautiful relationship down the drain, only to realise that it wasn't anything special..

well...*ahem*... i think the line "I can tell as you turn, I smell the sulfur so clear" is one of the most powerful lines, possibly not lyrically but the way that it is deleivered with the music and guitars and fandangles. It makes me wanna fuck shit up which is probli what is not intended. Also the line 'and fire's a beautiful sound....' is amazing beautiful. It kinda calms me down after the crazy line before it. I think the song is about repressed anger/frustration over something. The music kinda gives me that vibe, its kinda jumpy and anxious, like they are trying to let something out. The lyrics make me think that the person the song is about, is fucking everything up, like they just dont care what happens i.e "So I'll watch the matches, turn to ashes," and " the wings that you burn turn to ashes my dear." It is as if this person doesnt care about anything or anyone else and it is shown by their lack of care for what ever it is they are burning, example: the matches that they are wasting and the wings. But who ever wrote the song also is starting to not care, only about the person this time, 'And torch the part of me that's you.' They realise that what ever they had is now over, and its best to burn and destroy theri old memories and bits of relationship they had left. whew. hope what i wrote all makes sense

i can't believe only 2 people have commented on this one! i LOVE this song! it's like a mellow rock that's exciting to listen to, but it's not so loud that it gives u a headache. this song makes a lot of sense! it tells it's own story. i love it!

this song has so much feeling! Personally, i interpret it two ways: a relationship falling apart is one. the other is that we're only ashes in the scale of things. we're small and pathetic or something like that.

"Piece by piece, and bit by bit I'll break this down for you, real slow But I can't whisper all of this And I can't seem to let this go" //I think he is some what angry and just fed up, that's why he says "I can't whisper all of this" because it might lead to shouting. "So I'll watch the matches, turn to ashes I'll watch the matches, turn to ashes" //I look at these two lines and look at is as a metaphorical phrase.. He is referring to their relationship as matches and it's turning to ashes right infront of his eyes.. "I can tell as you turn, I smell the sulfur so clear And fire's a beautiful sound And the wings that you burn turn to ashes my dear And ashes just fall to the ground" //That first line, makes me think that his girlfriend, or whatever the case may be, is walking away from the relationship or giving up. And everything is just clear to him, making him see that their relationship was going to go downhill and that it wasn't as important to her as it was to him. "Part and part and inch by inch You'll have your mile when its through Incinerate whats left of this And torch the part of me that's you" //I should have said this at the beginning, but the song (in my eyes) tells a story. And this is the part where he says "fuck it!" and just sits back and tells her to incinerate what they ever had.. basically he just sits back and watches it all go down the drain "burn to ashes" im not sure if any of what i said made sense to you.. lol.. but thats how ive looked at it..

"I can tell as you turn, I smell the sulfur so clear And fire's a beautiful sound And the wings that you burn turn to ashes my dear And ashes just fall to the ground." These lines are just brilliant. I just love the way that the first two lines are delivered, and the last two lines hold a meaning that I'm surprised no one has brought up yet. "And the wings that you burn turn to ashes my dear And ashes just fall to the ground." If you're not familliar with the myth of Daedalus and Icarus, it's about a man and his son, locked up in a tower. The man, being a bright one, fashions two pairs of wings out of feathers, string and wax. He cautions his son not to fly too low or too high, or the wings will malfunction due to the moisture of clouds or the heat of the sun, respectively. Although at the beginning, he heeds his father's advice, later in their flight to safety, he loses himself in the exhilaration of the moment, and flies upwards "as if to reach heaven". Of course, the wax melts, and his poor son plummits to his death in the waters below. Of course, this isn't really what the song lyrics alude to, but it's something along those lines. It's advising that if you constantly repress your dreams and ambitions by saying that they'll never happen, you're just doomed to fail from the start. It's a beautiful image, as well. Great song. Probably the best song on North.

Voli.. that makes perfect sense to me... One day I was sitting beside my boyfriend, and he was listening to music. I asked him what he was listening to, and it was this song. He broke up with me later that evening. Kind of a weird coincidence, eh?
