The part where it says "you took my chance from so far away" should say "let your dime light shine from so far away" This song is amazing, I think that it is about sobering up and realizing everything that you have done to the people around you, and how you can never mend some ties back together.

small correction: "Your dim light shines from so far away" is what Dave sings and what is written in the album's book. You're right, Dan Murphy co-wrote this song but Dave sings it anyway and Dan does the backing vocals as usual. I love the lyric "as I watched you walk away, I hoped a part of you would stay". It's a game-with-words (one of many) where he changes the usual expression "a part of me hoped you'd stay". Great music too!

Actually, this was the one song on the album that was written and sung by guitarist Dan Murphy. And it was inspired by being on the road missing his 5(?) year old son. Thats right out of a Rolling Stone interview. Although the Lyrics were tailored to a relationship.
