Intro: G
G
Call you up in the middle of the night
Em
Like a firefly without a light
C
You were there like a blowtorch burnin'
D
I was a key that could use a little turnin'
G
So tired that I couldn't even sleep
Em
So many secrets I couldn't keep
C
Promised myself I wouldn't weep
D
One more promise I couldn't keep
C D
It seems no one can help me now
G Em
I'm in too deep there's no way out
C Bm D
This time I have really led myself astray
Chorus:
G
Runaway train never going back
Em
Wrong way on a one way track
C
Seems like I should be getting somewhere
D
Somehow I'm neither here nor there
Verse 2
Can you help me remember how to smile
Make it somehow all seem worthwile
How on earth did I get so jaded
Life's mysteries seem so faded
I can go where no one else can go
I know what no one else knows
Here I am just drowning in the rain
With a ticket for a runaway train
And everything seems cut and dry
Day and night, Earth and sky
Somehow I just don't believe it
Chorus
Bridge:
G
Got a ticket for a runaway train
Em
Like a madman laughing at the rain
C
Little out of touch little insane
D
It's just easier than dealing with the pain
G
Runaway train never going back
Em
Wrong way on a one way track
C
Seems like I should be getting somewhere
D
Somehow I'm neither here nor there
G
Runaway train never coming back
Em
Runaway train tearing up the track
C
Runaway train burning in my veins
D
Id runaway but it always seems the same.

| i'd subscribe to the second theory of the mesnings of the song.. to me the lyrics say that you have problems, but taking the easy way to deal with the pain will just put you back in the same situation or worse. "seems like i should be getting somewhere somehow i'm neither here nor there " | |

| Obviously the song was written about missing kids but the great thing about music is that it can mean anything the listener wants it to | |

| i just heard this song for the first time. it is so hauntingly perfect. to me, this song means that you're not sure of yourself. you have no idea what's happened to you, or why nothing seems clear anymore. i had that experience...i still cant shake that feeling "seems like i should be getting somewhere, somehow i'm neither here nor there." it feels like there's now where to belong...somethings happening, but who know what it is? you can see from the video that it's about runaways, but that's not all. its about the pain they feel, and why they run. all in all, a wonderful song. | |

| I listen to this song over and over it is really well played by Soul Asylum as well as their other songs. I found this song to speak of running away as a vice to solvbe problems and the deeper they got into drugs\being on the streets\letting their problems build gott them to feel that they would never return from where they came from, needing someone's help and guidance to bring them on their feet again. a friend explained how she felt this song heavy since her life experiences was from running away and being on streets and how the kids depicted on the video is so true and how she felt for anyone going through this.i still remember her. hope shes alright | |

| i also agree with the depression element of the song, how on earth did i get so jaded, lifes mystery seemed so faded. great line. amazing song i remember having to sing this song back in chorus in like 7th grade and i had no idea what it meant, i envision a runaway train. | |
