The Day I Tried to Live - SOUNDGARDEN
-------------------------------------
(off of the album Superunknown)
The intro is played by two guitars, one slightly distorted, the other
with a clean tone....the distorted guitar's riff is played a few more
times in different parts of the song. Just listen to it to get all
the parts right:
guitar 1 (a little distortion):
e |--12----10--9-127--6---|-6--6/8-8/10----------------| Repeat
B |------------------------|----------------------------| this 6 times
G |------------------------|----------------------------|
guitar 2 (clear tone):
comes in on second measure the first cycle of the riff guitar one is playing
e |------------------------|-712--12--12/7--7--712----| repeat 4
B |------------------------|----------------------------| times
G |------------------------|----------------------------|
on fourth time play this for second guitar:
e |-12/7--7--712--12-13/7-| e |--14/8-814-148-14/7-|
B |------------------------| then this B |----------------------|
G |------------------------| G |----------------------|
then the bass and drums come in for their little intro and during that
the distorted guitar plays something close to this slowly in rythym
with the bass:
D -12-12-12-12-12---12-12/11-11/10--10-10-10-10-10---10/9-9/8--8-8-8-8-8
then comes the main riff, and oh how nice it is:
all strums are DOWN-
e |-7-7-7-7-7--7-7/6-6/5--5-5-5-5-5--5-5/4-4/3-3-3-|
B |-7-7-7-7-7--7-7/6-6/5--5-5-5-5-5--5-5/4-4/3-3-3-|
G |-8-8-8-8-8--8-8/7-7/6--6-6-6-6-6--6-6/5-5/4-4-4-|
D |-9-9-9-9-9--9-9/8-8/7--7-7-7-7-7--7-7/6-6/5-5-5-|
A |-9-9-9-9-9--9-9/8-8/7--7-7-7-7-7--7-7/6-6/5-5-5-|
E |-7-7-7-7-7--7-7/6-6/5--5-5-5-5-5--5-5/4-4/3-3-3-|
I'm not sure but I think that right before the main riff is played
this chord is strummed once :
e 6
B 6
G 7
D 8
A 8
E 6
the main riff is repeated it I think 5 times and then goes back into
the intro riff the distorted guitar played and then back into the main
riff later and then....you get it.
oh, towards the end there's a little dink of a riff that sort of hangs
there until the end - I forgot to figure that out but it shouldn't
exactly be difficult.
that's about it.
disclaimer: I figured ths out on an acoustic guitar so keep that in
mind while you fix the mistakes....

| Im repeating pretty much what everyone else has said, I think its about waking up with the sense that you want to accomplish something. "A voice was in my head, It said seize the day" But in the end its alot like my life, I try to seize the day thinking Im doing something good but it ends up that my efforts are fruitless. "The day I tried to live I wallowed in the blood and mud with All the other pigs" But for some reason, I get up and try it again, just like the person in this song. "One more time around might do it" Its a harsh cycle. Peace. | |

| I thought this song was about kamikazes and suicidal people trying to get some kind of attention to avoid the pain in their lives :"... a voice was in my head, it said seize the day, pull the trigger, drop the blade and watch the rolling heads". | |

| I think it's about a guy who's never had much faith in humanity and is recalling the time he nontheless attempted to fit in with the dog-eat-dog world of society - "The day I tried to live I wallowed in the blood and mud with All the other pigs". It was never going to work for him but now that's hes tried, he can at least go back to being true to himself with the knowledge that he has confirmed his original suspicions. | |

| this is one of the coolest songs ever written...I think its about a guy who wakes up one day and decides to change his life, only instead of becoming a better person he decides on doing whatever he feels like, not caring about what is right or wrong (stealing from the poor and giving to the rich, executing people, torturing them)...he realizes that he isn't special at all and that everyone around him is a pig so he might as well join them and become corrupt like everyone else, that he isn't any more perfect than anyone else so he's a liar too...this is his day to try living his life the way he REALLY wants to, not the way he's forced to | |

| "The day I tried to win I dangled from the power lines And let the martyrs stretch" That is such a fantastic image. Picture the man, dangling from the power lines. Like birds perched up there, he's safe until he's grounded. All the passing would-be martyrs realise this and stretch for their chance of a noble death, being electrocuted whilst "saving" a man. The irony of course being that they would kill him. Great line. | |
