Here is an IMPROVED and COMPLETE tab for The Day I Tried to Live. Enjoy.

The Day I Tried To Live -- Soundgarden
>From "Superunknown"
Tabbed by Jeeves (philipe@basix.com)

Intro, Guitar 1 (Slight Distortion)

e |-10-9-7-104-4-4/7-7---------------------------|
B |-----------------------------------------------|
G |-----------------------------------------------|
D |-----------------------------------------------|
A |-----------------------------------------------|
E |-----------------------------------------------|

Intro, Guitar 2 (Clear Tone)

Begin halfway through first cycle of guitar 1's riff.
Listen to the song to get the exact rhythm.

e |-104--7-9-97---------------------------------|
B |-----------------------------------------------|
G |-----------------------------------------------|
D |-----------------------------------------------|
A |-----------------------------------------------|
E |-----------------------------------------------|

after 2 cycles of guitar 1, do this instead:

e |-1510--1510-1510-157-----------------------|
B |-----------------------------------------------|
G |-----------------------------------------------|
D |-----------------------------------------------|
A |-----------------------------------------------|
E |-----------------------------------------------|

Bass comes in here. This riff is doubled by one guitar
when the vocals start.

e |-----------------------------------------------|
B |-----------------------------------------------|
G |-----------------------------------------------|
D |-----------------------------------------------|
A |-77777-765433333-3-2-00000---------------------|
E |---------------------------0-------------------|

Play the above riff until the vocal line before the
chorus, and then do:

e |-----------------7644444-----------------------|
B |-----------------7644444-----------------------|
G |-----------------8755555-----------------------|
D |-----------------9866666-----------------------|
A |-77777-765433333-9866666-----------------------|
E |-----------------7644444-----------------------|
(...and watch the rolling heads)

Now start playing bar chords on the twelfth fret,
loud and distorted.

e |-12-12-12-12-12--12-11-10-9--8--8--8--8--8-----|
B |-12-12-12-12-12--12-11-10-9--8--8--8--8--8-----|
G |-13-13-13-13-13--13-12-11-10-9--9--9--9--9-----|
D |-14-14-14-14-14--14-13-12-11-10-10-10-10-10----|
A |-14-14-14-14-14--14-13-12-11-10-10-10-10-10----|
E |-12-12-12-12-12--12-11-10-9--8--8--8--8--8-----|

e |-8--7-55555------------------------------------|
B |-8--7-55555------------------------------------|
G |-9--8-66666------------------------------------|
D |-10-9-77777------------------------------------|
A |-10-9-77777------------------------------------|
E |-8--7-55555------------------------------------|

Depending on which verse you are on, the above riff
will repeat either two or four times.

Now, guitar one will play this:

e |-10-9-7-104-4-4-6-6---10-9-7-105-5-5-7-7-----|
B |-----------------------------------------------|
G |-----------------------------------------------|
D |-----------------------------------------------|
A |-----------------------------------------------|
E |-----------------------------------------------|

And guitar two will play this, rather quietly:

e |-7-7-7-7-8--8--8--8--8--12-12-12-12------------|
B |-7-7-7-7-8--8--8--8--8--12-12-12-12------------|
G |-8-8-8-8-9--9--9--9--9--13-13-13-13------------|
D |-9-9-9-9-10-10-10-10-10-14-14-14-14------------|
A |-9-9-9-9-10-10-10-10-10-14-14-14-14------------|
E |-7-7-7-7-8--8--8--8--8--12-12-12-12------------|

e |-9--9--9--9--9---------------------------------|
B |-9--9--9--9--9---------------------------------|
G |-10-10-10-10-10--------------------------------|
D |-11-11-11-11-11--------------------------------|
A |-11-11-11-11-11--------------------------------|
E |-9--9--9--9--9---------------------------------|

Repeat twice (...one more time around might do it)

Then this little line, in the same style as the
one above (all the repeats of the first two
chords omitted for brevity):

Guitar 1 joins here
v
e |-12--7--9--9--9--9--9----9--8--7-6-55555-5422222-|
B |-12--7--9--9--9--9--9----9--8--7-6-55555-5422222-|
G |-13--8--10-10-10-10-10---10-9--8-7-66666-6533333-|
D |-14--9--11-11-11-11-11---11-10-9-8-77777-7644444-|
A |-14--9--11-11-11-11-11---11-10-9-8-77777-7644444-|
E |-12--7--9--9--9--9--9----9--8--7-6-55555-5422222-|

Go back to the verse riff if you need to, or repeat
the above riff several times for the "I learned that
I was a liar..." part. There are a couple more appearances
of the intro line later in the song, but they are not hard
to figure out.

This song was one of my anthems in my late teens. I think it's about the evils of living like a sheep and fitting yourself into the evil materialistic corporate system.

i'm with some of the others here. he gets up and tries to fit in. he tried to "live", but live in the sense of how a lot of the rest of society is living - corruptly. or something like that

i think this song is not si much a story as it is a point of view i think its about that he is not a bad person and that he doesn't fit in 2 socity hes 2 kind and caring and when he tries 2 b like everybody eles he realizes that he isnt like that that he doesnt fit in the world

no no no no no, I concur with the elder commentarian statespeople of this page who describe it as a song about being inspired to go out and be different, and it all goes horribly wrong. The narrator realises he is the same as everyone else, he is humbled by his experince and is in no position to be judgemental. In such a state, bliss may be found for connection with others is at a maximum. Hence the music that it accompanies the lines "just like you" is music that says "and what a releif" not " I found out I'm just like you and I hate myself and I want to die"

Daddio, With that part of the song, I always thought it was about how the person that the songs talking about tried to do confrom to society, but he ended up washed up, thus he "Dangled from the powerlines". "Let the martyrs stretch" This songs from the point of view of a depressed person, someone who's self pity makes themselves feel like a loser. His mind thinks everyone else is a martyr because he loathes himself, but he comes to the realisation at that point, that they are normal, and are just doing daily stretches. Y'know, just warming up stretches that people do before sports. Or it could mean that he's trying to do something meaningful and the "Let the martyrs stretch" line means that, in his mind, he's trying to be a martyr, he's trying to get there, but he realises if he wants to become a martyr, the whole concept of a martyr would have to stretch. I can't really say much more, otherwise I'd be repeating what everyone would have already said. Just my two cents...

Chris sings this song with emotion, makes me think it's more than a story about some guy he's thinking of. It's about trying to fit in and not being accepted, realising you're not a true person , you're just like everyone else you loathe, a liar, the day you tried to change something, the day you tried to live. This is one of those songs that SOME people can relate to.

it is defenitely about waking up and deciding that it was time to 'live' and 'win'...which meant to join the rat race, lie, support capitalism... anyone know what this verse means?? The day I tried to win I dangled from the power lines And let the martyrs stretch Singing

I think this song is about trying to get to the top, and having to do everything dirty to get there whether it be lie, cheat, steal or kill, then realizing your no better than all the other pigs that are trying to do the same
