Tab for Soundgarden's
Burden in my hand
this tab has two sections, a sectional tab, then a tab with the lyrics
directly under if you're having trouble with the timing. this probably is
totally correct, but I think it's pretty damn close. Also, this is the
first tab I've ever done so if you don't like it screw you.

| It's mainly about the environment, but he also makes allusion to european imperialism: "Hands all over Western culture Ruffling feathers and turning eagles into vultures" Eagles -> The west was inhabited by noble, nature-conscious people. The nobility and grace of the eagle (a now endangered species) essentially represents the state of the Americas prior to colonisation. Vultures -> The colonists brought capitalism and greed with them, corrupting the west. The fact the the bald eagle is an American icon adds irony to these lyrics. "In a striking motion trees fall down Like dying soldiers" Another reference to colonialism and the wars that occured during those times. Awesome lyrics from CC, as usually. | |

The Masta The Muther F*ing Masta! |

| soundgarden used to be one of my favorite bands in the 8th grade i heard this song on the radio the other day and it made me think of charles manson and the manson family manson told his followers that when helter skelter (race war) went down, he would lead them into a hole in the desert. they would hide out there through the war. they also called rich white elitists and politicians "pigs". i don't think this song really has a DEEP MEANING or anything. i think it's just supposed to sound cool&set a mood | |

| i agree with thunderbolt on this one. it is totally an environmental message. it says "turning eagles into vultures" that could be about how america (eagle) the wonderful beautiful nation has become a vulture and is just picking at the scraps of our dying planet. that then ties into "gonna kill your mother" which probably refers to earth (mother), and how were killing it. and of course when he says "and i love her" hes not being creepy and saying he loves your mom, hes saying he loves the earth and doesnt want it to die. then when it gets to "crewmen thank her then lay down their oily blanket" hes probably talking about crewmen on freighters being glad that theres water to sail on or something, then polluting it with oil from the ship. the part of "In a striking motion trees fall down Like dying soldiers" hes talking about the people clearcutting forests, and falling down like dying soldiers is like an analogy of a war between man and nature and how nature is being destroyed. then he gets to "Hands all over the words I utter Change them into what you want to Like balls of clay Put your hands away" hes actually telling us not to overanalyze his lyrics, which in a way makes asses out of all of us! on that note, im gonna stop overanalyzing his lyrics. | |

| uhh...no..."drown in alcohol", how about he lost his girl because of his alcoholism? To him, its a vicious cycle, the only thing that can ease his pain is drinking, yet drinking is robbing him of his health, and of his life...like a "tumor in his head" and the bottle is becoming a burden. | |

| This song is very deceiving - the lyrics are what they are, but the first few times you hear this song you are going to think it is positive. The verse, buildup to the chours and chours itself are all extremely powerful and uplifting; you would never ever think it's about something so degrading and depressing. I gotta hand it to Soundgarden for writing this one, even if the meaning is pretty sick. | |

| it seems to be about a guy who kills his girlfriend and hides the body, but then he regrets what he did, saying that "I lost my head again" and by leaving her in the sand, he made more problems for himself like a burden in his hand | |

| To me the song means that there are those in the Middle East now that don't beleive in war but have to fight it anyway. The weapon is an extension of their body and they are trained to use it as such. If I were in a situation like a "me or him" scenario, I would have a difficult decision because the "enemy" is probably some guy that his only option is to fight because he is paid to do so. That may be his only means of income to support his family, which seems to be the case in a lot of the U.S. Forces. They had no other options but to enlist. Therefore the men fighting are the same, brothers even. Imagine killing because someone else told you to and its justified. Think about what this does to people. The real enemy is the ideals behind the scenes driving the war mentality through propaganda. Another scenario would be that they are fighting only because we wiped out their whole family 'accidentily'. That is what breeds terrorism, these accidents and our ignorance to find out what is really going on instead of only watching CNN and such. This also signifies the the extremely high alcohlism rate in the military. I'm sure this is not what it was intentionally suppose to mean, but given my prior military background, it means this to me. | |

| In my opinion, this song reflects the insecurity of the writer, his fear of being left alone and his desperation to find someone to help him. | |
