i really don't know what the song means. just to say something: the live acoustic version is one of the best things i've ever heard. anyway, sparta rocks.

Maybe this song is about an assasination. The host could be an important leader who keeps everything running and organized and without him the future seems to have "fallen short" and all hope appears to be lost. I can't think of someone who was assasinated in that part of Africa though.

I believe this song is about a failed relationship. Not literally a murder. I think that would be too obvious. I think the author is trying to tell about a relationship that he himself demolished. I think he realizes his faults, and feels guilt, but also knows he cannot change. Even if it hurts those around him. Look at "you can spare us the formal toast the drunken anecdotes" I think he's somewhat bitter and sorry as well. But it's too late to matter.
