Spice Girls Biography

Band Picture

Spice Girls consists of Emma Bunton, Melanie Brown, Melanie Chisholm, Victoria Beckham.

The Spice Girls are a girl group formed in London, UK. They are currently the biggest-selling all-female group in history, with combined album and single sales of over 75 million.

"R U 18-23 with the ability to sing/dance? R U streetwise, ambitious, outgoing and determined?" That advert, which was featured in The Stage magazine in 1993, started a world wide pop phenomenon and turned five young women into global superstars.

In 1993, auditions were held in London for a new all girl group. Five girls were selected from hundreds to form the final line up of Melanie Chisholm, Geri Halliwell, Melanie Brown, Victoria Adams and Michelle Stephenson. However, the members of the group could have been completely different. Geri missed the original audition, but called the producers up with a made up story and talked her way in to the final 12 despite her lack of training. Melanie Chisholm missed her call back after the original auditions because she had tonsillitis, but she got her mother to ring up and beg them to let her do it at a later date. In the final call backs, Victoria and Geri both sang out of tune. Both girls were aware of their mistakes but pleaded for a chance while making excuses. Victoria wrote in her biography the song was in the wrong key for her, while Geri on the other hand just had no training or natural ability to be in tune. In July 1993 (after Michelle Stephenson and her replacement had both left), Emma Bunton joined the group after her singing teacher recommended her to the other girls. From that point until March 1994, the five girls lived together in a house in Maidenhead, where they rehearsed dance routines, began to work in the studio, and "ate a lot of toast!". They were told that their success would be strictly up to them. They had access to a recording studio, vocal teacher, and dance rehearsal area. No one made them practice, but the girls were all determined to make something of themselves.
