TEARS FOR FEARS: "FALLING DOWN"
(Roland Orzabal)
from the album Raoul and the Kings of Spain

---2-------2--------2-------2-----2-------2----------------|
---0-------0--------0-------0-----0------------------------|
---0-------3--------1-------0-----0------------------------|
-----------------------------------------------------------|
Has the ship run a - ground

What's that shape, what's that sound?
That's just me falling down

Some of us are free, some are bound
Some will swim, some will drown
Some of us are saints, some are clowns
Just like me, they're falling down

Chorus:
-----------
C
Well I lied to the nation
Em
While my reputation ran dry
C
>From my lungs to my liver
Em
Clung to the river bank's side
C
Yeah well I'm back in the water

Doing what I oughtta
Em
Trying to lead an ordinary life

Verse two (as verse one):
---------------------------------
Is this world spinning round
Has the ship run aground
What's that shape, what's that sound
That's just me falling down

Some of us are green, some are brown
Some are lost, some are found
Sight unseen, baby, sound on sound
Pray for me, I'm falling down

Chorus Two (as chorus one):
-------------------------------------
I was lost in the jungle
Crossed over enemy lines
Well I got me a red nose
By sleeping under hedgerows at night
Yeah well I tried levitation
Flying in formation
Heaven knows the weight of this crime

(Repeat verse one omitting second stanza)

Ending:
-----------
C Em
Falling down
C Em
Falling down
C Em
Falling down
C Em
Falling down

(Play verse "riff" twice ending with slight crescendo on second time)

(For a longer discussion of my view of the album "Raoul and the Kings of Spain - RATKOS - please see my comment on the song "Me and My Big Ideas.") Simply: I believe this album was written during or right after Roland Orzibal was involved in an extramarital affair. Many lyrics seem to allude to this. "Falling Down" is about the affair. Orzibal is actually a fairly devout Catholic (not a nut like Mel Gibson, more along the likes of U2's Bono, another liberal but devout Catholic). He felt very guilty about the affair. Hence this song, with it's allusions to having "lied to the nation" and his move back toward "trying to lead an ordinary life" despite the "weight of this crime."
