In an interview right after Temple of the Dog released Cornell maid it apparent that the CD was a tribute to Wood, but each song was not about him or directed toward him. Reach Down and Say Hello 2 Heaven were both songs Cornell wrote after his death and were obviously about him. The rest were just songs that Cornell was working on and didn't really fit into anything that Soundgarden was doing. This was a perfect forum for Chris to put out a different kind of sound and album and still pay tribute to Andrew. That interview is on the internet somewhere, if I find the site I will post the url. This song to me is in no way about addiction. To me its definitely about religious people who fill there homes with religious figurines and propaganda, because in some way they feel this will bode well for them in getting into heaven. Like it was said earlier, its also about the individuals who make millions selling simple people the idea that they can buy themselves into heaven. It pretty much sums up to me how ridiculous religion has become.

even though (to me) it sounds of a religious song buyin your way ta heaven through earthly shit is a stupid concept ta complain an be all "anit-" about... -sayin that people put crosses an "propaganda" in they homes as a means to heaven is like sayin people buy rolling stones posters an hang em up on a wall someplace ta get into one a their concerts even though i think we all look to far inta lyrics a (all lyrics period), diggin fer subliminal messages an alla that crap - heres my two cents -an since theres only two sides a the arguement on the song..-ima add a third... id say if this track is actually somethin personal ta him [an not just a song he wrote] -its prolly about bein a last resortslashbargain - ause if it was just ''an easy way out'' kinda thing the song would go more like "i don' wanna work but i wanna get payed" but it dont so it (prolly) aint "i didnt know it was the wholy land" kinda shows that religion aint somethin he JUST found out about an wants in on - its like he failed on gettin inta heaven legitamately an thought that was it...but now theres a second way through (like 'Constantine' without spirits and demon cleaners) i could be wrong...-we all could bewrong...cant really know what a war's like less youer there when it happened

urlacher, you obviously dont know too much about the subject matter, or else you would have referred to the "700 Club" using its correct name. Anyways, donations from those shows go directly to helping the needy and church maintainence. And of course some of it goes to the preachers, and the people working at that church, but only enough to keep them alive. Sure there's a lot of greedy corrupt people in the churches, but that doesnt mean they all have to be labeled as such. I'm a christian, however I dont set foot in church simply because I feel the house of god is tainted as of late. However, theres still churches and televangelism programs who really are using the profits gained to help mankind and help build more churches. I highly doubt CC is singing about something as controversial as that, because its just not his style. I actually have to agree with SwornToTheBlack about this; it has to do with an addiction that's costing him his time, money, and life.

I agree more with the addiction thing, though its good that we have different opinions we can share.

Sorry to disagree, but in my humble (but accurate) opinion, this song is mocking the inherent greed of religious capitalism. The "wooden Jesus" (crucifix) and "Porcelain Mary" are both things that you would find on the wall or in the yard of a typical Catholic's house. Now, I'm a Christian (with good musical taste), but I actually agree with the driving point of this song: people who package Jesus memorabilia just to make money give real Christians a bad name.

I agree with both trains of thought here, the lyrics are clearly about corruption in religion, but the album was made in memory of andy wood, so it's obviously got to have something to do with him.

the album is dedicated to andy wood, so the song should be about him in some way. this one is about him spending on heroin as the chorus says.

this song is about heroin. "can i be saved? i spent all my money on a future grave. wooden jesus, i'll cut you in on 20% of my future sin". again, this song is probably about Andy Wood (R.I.P)

Its about religious exploitation for monetry gain, ie the indulgences and relics sold by catholic "preachers" in pre-reformation europe to buy you way out of purgatory, hence the lyrics about wooden jesus', porcelein mary's and coathanger halos that don't come cheap.

It can't be an addiction you ding bats. He said the check left his hand. People don't usually by drugs on check. If the album is in memory of Andy Wood, it doesn't mean all the songs are about him. It could be a tribute. Fate's warning made an album dedicated to Dream Theater, but none of the songs were about Dream Theater.

It means you can't buy your way into heaven. People like Pat Robertson and Jerry Falwell are the scum of the earth. They beg poor people for money so they can live in mansions and buy diamond mines in Africa. All the while telling their followers that if they give their money, God will make them rich.
