| I disagree with the death concept. This is a breakup, not a death. A death is taking one or two lines too literally and the overall song doesnt make any sense if that were the case. "And when she said Don’t you wish you were dead like me" This in my opinion is just a repeat of something he said to her being used as a stab at him because it was probably an argument where he said "She was dead" as in she was acting heartless about it. Which is why he feels the whole thing is unfair, "He deserved.." which makes it apparent he feels he was cheated out of the deal. "She fills my bed with gasoline You think I wouldn’t notice" This is the only part Im torn about but I think he's expressing how painful it is to sleep alone now that its "tainted" with her and memories. Even so much as maybe its a perfume or some kind of scent he can't be rid of. He "wouldnt notice" because he is numb to the world because of how depressed he is. The bed isn't on fire and gasoline in itself isn't really a symbol of hell. Overall I believe this song is about a breakup that he feels he wasn't able to really prove to her who he really was and how bad he needs her. He feels cheated and hes coming to realize that she will never return and understand how he feels. I believe "Santa Monica" has little or nothing to do with this song, it probably just had a nice ring to it. Various other artists have used Santa Monica lyrically as well its just a pleasant sounding city name in my opinion. | |

| this song is about a girl that feel in love with a man....and just like any relationship...it got old to her...and she longed for the "BETTER LIFE" so she left for Santa Monica....a suburb of HollyWood alota partying there...but just like any girl when all the men were done using her....she comes crawling back to the only person that would still love her....the one she left the first time......if u watch the video it explains this whole song.....but he sings from his point of view but the moral is....even though she left him...he took her back after she had been used and abused | |

| What exactly does 'she fills my bed with gasoline' mean? It sounds like a GREAT line, but I just wish I knew what it meant. Any help? | |

| I heard somewhere this song's title was referring to Santa Monica Blvd, as in the women he is talking about is a prostitute. Hence she has to leave for "Santa Monica" and the reference to being "Dead like Me"...something to that effect anyways. Think about it. | |

| I think you guys have it wrong, here's my take on it. "she said Don’t you wish you were dead like me" he's imagining that he's talking to her ghost, which is why before he says, "Oh it hurts to live" because she left him behind on earth. The gasoline in the bed represents him being afraid of his own mortality in that if he goes to sleep he might be consumed by fire (afraid of dying in his sleep and going to hell where he'd never meet her again). Santa Monica represents heaven. | |

| I agree with fushiontrigger7, the girl has died, and he's basically imagining her say "Don't you wish you were dead like me". He's feeling the pain of her being gone - "It hurts to live today". By Santa Monica, I don't think they mean it litterally, Santa Monica like fushiontrgger7 said, represents heaven. | |

| My thoughts on the line, "And when she said, 'don't you wish you were dead like me." She's a heartless bitch, she basically is saying that to rub it in that she's dumping him. If he was "dead" like her, it wouldn't hurt him that she was leaving...just a thought. | |

| I think that this line refers to how he feels he has no emotions, his heart is dead because she's gone away from him. I get the idea that this song is about a girl who left him for something better, but he doesn't think she got what she wanted, that it wasn't all that it seemed. "It hurts to breathe" shows that he misses her, is devastated, but "Her minds made up the girl is gone And now I’m forced to see I think I’m on my way" Shows that he realises that she's not going to do anything more for the relationship and that he can't change her mind. I love this song and how it really portrays all the emotions he seems to be feeling. He has an amazing voice, no? | |
