Artist: They Might Be Giants
Song: Experimental Film
Album: The Spine
Verse 1:
G F C D Em Am D G
The color of infinity inside an empty glass
G F C D Em Am D G
I'm squinting my eye and turning off and on and on and off the light
Em C D G
It's for this experimental film
Em C D G
Which nobody knows about and which
Em Am D G
I'm still figuring out what's going to go
C Am D G
In my experimental film
Chorus:
C D G Am7
Yeah, you're all gonna be in this experimental film
C D C D
And even though I can't explain it I already know how great it is
Verse 2:
I already know the ending. It's the part that makes your face implode
I don't know what makes your face implode, but that's the way the movie ends
And in my experimental film
Which nobody knows about and which
I'm still figuring out your face implodes
In my experimental film
Chorus:
Yeah, you're all gonna be in this experimental film
And even though I can't explain it I already know how great it is
And even though I can't explain it I already know how great it is
Solo:
F Eb Bb C Dm Gm C F
F Eb Bb C Dm Gm C F
Verse 3:
The color of infinity inside an empty glass
It's for this experimental film
Which nobody knows about and which
I'm still figuring out what's going to go
In my experimental film
Chorus:
Yeah, you're all gonna be in this experimental film
And even though I can't explain it
I already know how great it's gonna
Yeah, you're gonna be in this experimental film
And even though I can't explain it
I already know how great it
Even though I can't explain it
I already know how great it is
End on C chord

| I don't think that the Experimental Film is a metaphor for anything, I think the song is a sendup of the typical fim student's experimental film and the type of meaninglessly surreal and pseudo-intellectual images that are used in them. This is seen in the H*R cartoon that quite blatantly parodies one of these films. | |

| It's another one of thoes mindlessly idiotic stream-of conciousness things, that give us a nearly random sequence of images in an attempt to simulate the creative process. Much akin to many of the Homestar Runner cartoons and The Hitchhiker Trilogy. Often childish and retarted, it exist not so much as to present a mood or a message, but to give a blast of human existance God I love it. It's so amazingly stupid, but that's what makes it so wonderfully potent. Life is an Experimental Film, but we have absolutly no idea what's going on or why it happens or how to tell anyone what's happening? Whay the hell does our face implode. I don't know but, it's my top played song on iTunes. | |

| yep, you got it... his life is an experimental film. We are all in it because we are part of his life. Your face implodes when you die. The only part that confuses me at all is the first paragraph. I think he's trying to film infinity, and he can't get the lighting to look right lol. http://www.tmbg.org/band-info/songs/ | |
