Verse 1:
G C
When the ship runs out of ocean
G F
And the vessel runs aground

About the water running out
E G C G
"Land" is not a word we have to shout
Pre Chorus:

But there's something beside the shoreline
G F
Moving across the beachhead
D C
Coming up from the shipwreck
G D
Making as if to say
Chorus:
G C G D
Women & Meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeen
G C G G
Women & Meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeen
G C G D
Women & Meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeen
G C G G
Women & Meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeen
Bridge: ( Just Follow the patterns )
Bringing with them messages of love
And everywhere they go love will grow
When you see the faces of the women
And the men you soon will know
Verse 2:
Women and men have crossed the ocean
They now begin to pour
out of the boat and up to the shore
Two by two they enter the jungle
And soon they number more
Three by three as well as four by four
Pre Chorus:
Soon the stream of people gets wider
Then it becomes a river
river becomes an ocean
carrying ships that bear
Chorus
Women and men
Women and men
Women and men
Women and men

| or maybe it's just about a small ship of people arriving at a new, unpopulated place, and how it eventually becomes full and whatnot, due to traditional human behaviors... who knows? i tend to take it literally. good song, regardless. | |

| I'm surprised no one has posted on this song. So I will. I believe John & John were using simile to discuss giving birth, marriage, family and population growth. You be the judge... "ship runs out of ocean...land's where...boat is found": baby out of the water-filled womb, into the dry world. "nothing unexpected...water running out...not a word we have to shout": When ready to give birth, a woman's water breaks, but it's nothing to shout about. "something beside the shoreline...up from the shipwreck...beachhead": baby is born, mother is the shipwreck, hostpital room is the beachhead. "women & men...messages of love...love will grow": baby is either female or male, love of the parents, family love will grow. "faces of the women and the men...crossed the ocean..out the boat and up the shore": babies have grown up and are moving on. "two by two...jungle...soon they number more": Men and Women marry, or at least live together and join the community (the jungle), they have children of their own. "three by three...stream of people gets wider...river...ocean...carrying ships that BEAR women & men.": families grow larger, more and more families populate the earth and keep BEARING more and more children. | |
