G
life is like that, you know

D A Em G

Verse 1:
D A
i have your face in a photo in high school
Em
when you were alive
G
but that's all I have
D A
and I can't remember who I was myself then
EM
and it doesn't help
G
still I look to you as a friend

to tell me

Chorus:

D
who we are now, who we are
A
who we are now, who we are
Em G
where does time go now on a wake for young souls you tell me

A
it's who we are now, who we are
Em G
where does time go now on a wake for young souls
G
like a lullaby we sing

D A Em G

Verse 2:

well the wind that blows
it's blowing colder
and the child that grows
she's growing older
and the friends we know
they'll turn a shoulder
the friends we know
they're growing colder so

Chorus 2:

who we are now, who we are
who we are now, who we are
where does time go now on a wake for young souls
you tell me,
who we are now, who we are
it's who we are now, who we are
whoa whoa now on a wake for young souls

Bridge:

Em Bb

A
where's my soul?
Em Bb
where's my soul?
A G
where's my soul?
Em Bb
where's my soul?
A G
where's my soul?

verse 3:

cycle of the moon brings blood to the woman
in the blood of the woman brings birth of a child
child grow up
keep forgetting something
birth of a child comes someplace wild you
even grey days beat the shade to wean
unbodied unsouled unheard unseen
let the gift be grown in the time to call our own
let the truth be sewn before the window's closing
truth is natural like a wind that blows
follow the direction no matter where it goes
so it shall be the earth and the sea
let the truth blow like a hurricane through me

(Arpeggio)

Verse 4:

if i've been cold, if i've spoken in anger
to have been bold
forgive me
you know i don't see your mother
not like before
though she hasn't forgotten
she doesn't like to be reminded anymore
annie got married
it didn't come without tears
like the day you died I have laughter for these years

Chorus

so it's who we are now, who we are
it's who we are now, who we are
where does time go now on a wake for young souls now
it's who we are now, who we are
it's who we are now, who we are
whoa whoa on a wake for young souls

Ending:

D
all the things we know
A
are going to fall away from me
Em
like a grain of sand
G
slips through a good friend's hand

I think "they're rooting for us" is "they're moving on" I thought some of the other lyrics were a little different than what you wrote as well. but I guess we can't be sure and whatnot.

I'm pretty sure about these lyrics being correct, but there are a couple of places where stephens voice is hard to make out. The part that says "they're rooting for us" is probably the hardest part to make out. If I'm wrong about that line, well, oops I'm sorry. Oh, yeah, almost forgot. I love this song, that's why I just spent the last twenty minutes listening to it repeatedly, trying to figure out the little parts that are hard to hear. Peace, I'm out.

I think this song is about how he had this one friend, and the friend died, but he still reminesces about how much the friend meant to him which he doesnt realize until now. I think he is also talking about how quick life is, and how he has regrets about it within time like he wishes he realized it then. When he refers to Annie it seems liek she's the sister of his friend, and although he still sees the mom he doesn't like to remind her about the friend.

I think this song is hard to decifer, but after years of listening to it, I have decided on a pretty resonable thought on things. I think, the friend who died, the friend in the picture, is the speaker's highschool love, and that they had a child together: Annie. When "Annie got married, it didn't come without tears" the speaker thinks of her dead mother, all the memories they shared together, and all the memories of his child growing up. As far as the part about the friend's mother and telling the truth, I think maybe Annie dosen't know the speaker is her father, and he wants to tell her who he is before he gets too old and dosen't remember his memories of her mother anymore.

Yeah, I wasn't completely sure, and since it isn't on one of their cd's it isn't like there is a cd lining you could check or anything. Either way its close, and the song still kicks.

That's very interesting. To me, it seems more like the death of one's youth. The author is kind of reminiscing about when he was young and the friends he shared it with. Except for the line "the day you died", I don't think there's anything in there that particularly points out an actual death, though of course, you can take it any way you want it. If there is a death, it's the metaphorical death of the fun times and unshakeable bonds of youth. Perhaps losing touch with an highschool friend, or still being in touch, but everyone has to wear a suit and go about their white collar jobs and can't have fun anymore, but not an actual death.

I heard the demo they recorded of this in 94 and I liked it a lot. The cool thing is that it's been confirmed that its gonna be on Out of the Vein which means the have re-recorded it. What I'm wondering is did they change the lyrics or the song too much? It will be interesting to see.

This song is about growing up and the different stages of life, all of the places that we are in at different times, and the loss of innocence in general, hence "wake". If you look at each verse, they're all different stages of Stephan's life...the song ends where he is now, adressing a child about his divorced wife... Thats what I think.

well, these song is great! third eye blind is a really good group! for me is about a friend he had, that now is dead. so he is seeing "his face in a photo in highschool" and he realizes that he was a great friend and he misses him a lot, and he "can't remembered who he was himself then" so he wish he were there... to give him and advice, and to remind him who he is. "the friend we know they turn a shoulder" is like saying that is so hard to find true, real friends, and as you grow up you realize who that, and while he realize's he discovered that these "death" friend was probably the best he had ever known about. So even though he is dead, he know he will always be in his mind, and even though he never answers, he keep asking for his advices. "I have laughter for these years" is like remembering all the things they live through, and all the good times he spent with him. Is a really amazing song, is like just saying "Don't give up on someone, just because he/she is death, remember them when they were alive!"

I think maybe it's about both the death of youth/innocent times, and the death of a girlfriend. That seems to fit with him having a picture of her in high school, and with him saying that he doesn't see her mom anymore, not like before. Of course he wouldn't come around as much, because like the lyrics say, her mom hasn't forgotten about him, but she doesn't like to be reminded because it brings back the pain of losing a daughter.

I agree that this song is probably about the death of an old friend or something. truth is natural like a wind that blows follow the direction no matter where it goes so it shall be the earth and the sea let the truth blow like a hurricane through me i think those lines are beautiful. it's saying to live true, follow your heart wherever it leads you and you will live a full happy life. be honest to everyone and let people know what they mean to you before it's too late.
