Um, ok... I'll agree that 1000 Julys is about sex, and I'll even agree that Deep Inside of You is about sex, but this one definetely isn't. Stephen realizes that life is too short, and he doesn't want to waste it, so he lives his life like it's constantly fading; (like a "burning man") experiencing everything and anything. "I won't get enough until my legs are broken". He's a burning man, he's running around like hell; ie, he's living his life to the fullest. He won't stop until his legs are broken means he won't stop living his life until he's died. He may refer to sex in some of the lines, but that's not what the the theme of the song is. It's alot like the theme to "The Red Summer Sun", but then you probably think the theme to that is sex too.

a lot of his songs talk about sex. but i dont think this one is about sex. I think he is pissed cuz his girl cheated on him "maybe you thought i'd call instead im crashing down your hall" you know she wasnt expecting him to just show up. So now he's just like screw it.

this is from www.stephenjenkins.com "Burning Man' has to do more with Jack Kerouac actually, where Sal says about Dean and all their friends in New York, 'those are the ones for me mad to live, mad to talk, desirous of all things who burn, burn, burn'. And it's really about being a burning man, 'live your life like a burning man' is what it's about." - Stephan Jenkins

Burning Man is this weird festival they have in California... like this week-long, massive rave party and at the end of it they burn a effigy of some random guy... a huge effigy... i dunno, but does this relate in sumway to da song?! lol...

You can't judge anything from from what he says in concert. Stephen has a habit of making himself and his material shallow for the masses at concerts; trust me, I've seen them several times. He introduces Motorcycle Driveby as being about "a girl who dumped me, on my skinny white ass" harharhar. We know there's more to it than that. Same with 'Forget Myself' - "This is a song about how I was BAAAD, last summer." Riiight. It may also convey powerful messages that just about anyone can relate to but we aren't going to talk about those, no no. All I'm trying to say is that he likes to project a bad-ass image of himself and his music, but alot of it is pretense. Most everything he writes is very personal to him, he just doesn't like to get all poetic when he's trying to keep a stadium full of cheering people happy. So I stick by my interpretation of the song. Stephen may love women, but he's anything but shallow... he's at heart just a real emotional guy, and a genius lyricist.

I happen to agree with the former of the comments.. Sex. To illustrate, I was recently at a 3eb concert down in Jones Beach Ampitheatre, and Steven said something which resembles the following right before they played Semi-Charmed Life: (Refering to their touring), "In the last 2 years.. I have learned _NOTHING_ about myself... I am still a naughty... naughty... naughty... dirty, dirty bastard."

I agree that it's about living live to the fullest, but I think maybe it's more about how he's been living life the the fullest, doing everything he'd ever wished to do, but perhaps constantly running (ie. like a burning man would run) from committments & responsibilites & relationships . But maybe he's finally found someone he'd like to keep in his life, but he's not sure if it would grow to be anything so he says, "Hold me down, I want to find out." He's asking for their help to keep him stationary long enough to try. That's my 2¢ anyway. ~*PaIgE*~

well first of all, the first couple lines of this song completely suck me in. i think i mostly agree with cars and calories up there. i feel as though he's struggling to find a compromise between living widly without any ties and settling down enough to have a relationship with someone. in the end though, it doesn't look as though the relatioship won out and he's saying he's going to keep living without a care until "his legs are broken" or until it's literally not possible anymore. going along with what stringcheeseeater said, i wonder if a burning man means something more historically/symbolically since both things seem to have the same theme...

I'm not much of a third eye blind fan, but this song is powerful. I agree the most with string and fallon. It makes me think of someone holding out on being with someone (even though they want it) because of past things he isn't sure he can really trust her again. So I think "burning man" could be a reference to him denying himself what he wants and also holding back because of being afraid to get hurt again. I'm probably wrong, but that's just what it makes me think of.
