Taking the song a verse at a time could provide any mulititude of possible interpretations. And even with Dustin occasionally posting on this site I think he appreciates the thousands of interpretations of his words and wouldn't do a thing to express what he actually intended with the lyrics. Also, I understand that everything you post is simply how you feel, so I'm not going to lambaste any of what you said (also, I think it's well thought out and something I can appreciate amongst the litany of "oh Thrice roxxx!!!" posts). I try to take Thrice songs as I do because I really wish a band this talented weren't so easily strayed by religion, which in my humble opinion is pure fallacy. Especially notions of thaumaturgy (sorry I just learned that word and I like it). Back to the matter at hand, I believe that everything one does that they consider morally wrong and against what they themselves believe does tarnish them in some way, and one's shadow never looks the same after a period of self-degradation. And yes that could be interpreted as sin. However, looking at the rest of the song I still collapse on the notion that maybe there's a chrisis of faith taking place, especially the lines "In summers past... but the answers never came." However I can pick up the notion that he's not talking about himself but rather narrating an event in which someone fell from grace. And the last line leaves me bitter if the whole song is taken at narration because it mentions that without christ one is dead, and even teh notion of forgiveness and savior may be beyond reach. But I would think that the fall from grace would be a result of asking questions of a source one had appreciated their whole life but never really interrogated. Upon the staggering notice that answers can't be found, the protagonist turns from God, and feels betrayed ("call it treason"). So I guess your idea of a return to a life of sin is more or less the same way I perceive it. Wow. You can judge how big a loser one is by the length of their post.

some of you have said this song isnt all that great but i think it is awesome, the first time i heard it i just turned it up really loud and totally fell in love with it. i cant wait for the cd to come out. to me it is about a relationship that was slowly going downhill, and was trying to be fixed but couldnt so a ghost was all that was left.

I always thought it was "meaning in these lies." And as far as see you in the shallows, all his friends are dead in the water from their leap of faith (to stretch the language a little). Also the cliff has been well worn by ignorance, therefore those who have leapt before him have been wrong. I agree with you on In Years to Come, I always thought that was about sacrificing for God and feeling his love, and "it's a different kind of love" drags it away from a loving relationship (presumably with his wife, he's married.) Anyway, it just seemed to me that lyrics from Identity Chrisis were much more pious, and even had allusions to God with terms like Adonai (Ultra Blue) and His Grace (Torch to End All Torches) whereas on the Illusion of Safety he was much more subtle. In any case, I'm just curious what you thought of THIS song, as far as meaning dnask8.

Am I the only one who likes Thrice just as much as I used to? I think the change is good, but I agree with SumGuy, if they wanted to put something on the radio, they should've put an oldeer song first. But on a more related note, despite the fact that Thrice is christian (not christian rock, thats just their beleifs) i tihnk this song is about findiind out that god doesnt exist. Or maybe its about how dreams die within us, and we lose all faith in the things we love. I know I've been there before. Well this is still a damn good song, and I dont care what you people say.

handgun2: Dustin's songmeanings name is The_Action_Index he has only posted a couple of times though. Something else I thought about this weekend about this song is when he says "a ghost is all that's left of everything we swore we never would forget we tried to bleed the sickness but we drained our hearts instead" Some believers start to slowly slip away from God and back to the temptations of satan. They start with little things like little lies and slowly move onto other, much bigger things. When you first give your life to Christ you usually say to yourself "I am going to live my whole life for God, give him my everything and do eveyrthing right and never do anything wrong again..." And you swear you "would never forget" about God. The the sins make you feel God for a short amount of time (like heroin) and they become a sickness on your soul. WHat you don't kknow is even thought the sins feel good they are constantly taking a toll on your heart/soul, non-believers call this "Karma." So that is what I THINK he might be saying. He is telling a story about falling back into a life of sin. REMEMBER: THIS IS ONLY WHAT I PERSONALLY THINK. YOU MIGHT THINK DIFFERENT. I am wondering what you think about that darnhoodlums?

SumGuy, it wouldn't make sense for Thrice to market material from a CD that was released 2 years ago. In fact, I wouldn't believe their current record label would have the rights to market their old material, so obviously, their new CD on Island records gets the publicity. Not their best, but still an awesome song.

I don't believe that the Illusion of Safety talked about an inner conflict with Christianity. I talked to Dustin after a show just this past Halloween in Portland and he told me that he had grown in his faith not lost any of it. If you listen to songs such as Betrayal is a Symptom (I know I am writing this on the "All That’s Left" page but new listeners will only go to this song since it is on the radio) and break it down and view lines such as: "...somehow I find beauty in my failings, somehow I find meaning in this life, some how I look perfect in this fracture...I walk with eyes closed, glancing down to hide my face." Possibly he sinned and he could be glancing down to hide the shame he felt from sinning. Even though he messed up God gives him the power to find meaning in a life that someone else would consider worthless and he found a certain value for his life, what ever that value may be. Also on songs like See You in the Shallows look at it as a person putting all trust in God and taking a (metaphorical) plunge into Gods hands. And when he "glances his down to see he crew" They aren’t ready for the commitment yet and he is taking it alone because he is ready that’s why he is confused and says “…don’t know why I am even here, because I’m afraid to be alone…” On the song In Years to Come he could be talking about the love he feels for God (Though I tell my girlfriend to listen to that song because it puts into words the way I feel about her) and Dustin is trying to put into words what he would do for God (or maybe someone he loves immensely) and sings the most extreme cases he can think of to prove how much he would do for this person. He says “It’s a gift that keeps on giving…I’ll give you all I have to give” and he could be either talking to God or a girl he loves saying that he will do everything, everything he can to show them how much he loves them in all the years to come. And love is a gift that keeps on giving especially Gods love. And the lines: “I need you more than I'll ever know. Until I stop breathing, my lungs will take you for granted.” Sounds to me like he is talking to God or someone else he loves a lot. I think that this is the best song Thrice ever wrote. It can be viewed as both a love song or a confession of love to God. Either way which ever YOU see is what he song means remember: MUSIC IS DIVERSE! THESE ARE ALL MY OPINIONS YOURS WILL BE DIFFERENT! Other songs display the Christian connection as well on “The Illusion of Safety” here are a few others quickly: Deadbolt – talks about the temptations of Satan. To Awake and Avenge The Dead – Christ’s life after death and The Holy Spirit/ I also think it is about Reasoning (double meaning or something) Anyway remember that ALL of this is just my opinions if you see it differently then so be it. I don’t care, I am sharing what I think and if you don’t like it then post your own theory. Again I don’t care, you have you thoughts I have mine. Oh yeah and I like the new song here All That’s Left. I think it is a great progression for Thrice, though it is a bit disappointing to hear them on the radio but we all knew it was coming sooner or later so don’t seem to surprised, we all knew they had the talent and they are finally getting the respect they deserve for being so amazing. Better start saving your dollars though, because their shows are going to start costing a lot more to go see. No more $10 shows. I can’t wait for the new album to come out of the 22nd. I am going to be waiting in line at the record store to pick up my copy. I have high expectations for the album and I know my favorite band won’t let me down.
