"Betrayal Is a Symptom"

Transcribed by Jim Bodenschatz (enevolaprime@yahoo.com)

*NOTE* For this song's intro, I have borrowed excerpts from transcriptions that
other tabbers have done and added a few things to make it as accurate as
possible. I didn't want to release this tab without giving due credit to those
who deserve it. Also, a certain amount of credit must go to Ed Breckenridge
(Thrice's bass player) for confirming that this song uses only half-step (and
not half-step/dropped C#) tuning. My sincerest thanks goes out to all of you.

I find it odd that Dusitn sent a summary of the song meaning as he wrote them. On Thrice's website, there's a thing in the faq about them not posting song lyrics because they want people to figure out the song meanings for themselves.

Just because its not labeled as a christian band doesn't mean that the band members and the person who writes the song isn't. There are alot of secular bands that have christian band members.....Lifehouse, P.O.D., MxPx, etc. So Mluh....dont judge, you cannot honestly say that you know what the song means. Only the writer can knows that.

yeah, honestly. if their lyrics have religious undertones, then who the fuck CARES?! you can still find just as much meaning in them by not applying them to religion.. and if thats what you want to do, then DO IT. no one is holding a gun to your head and telling you to accept the fact that there are chrisitian ties. say that there are satanic ties if it makes you all happy, just SHUT UP about it already. we get the point.

when i first heard these lyrics, i thought it was some sort of hint that dustin was turning from his religion or something. but.. it isn't. oh well. i'll just post what he wrote to me. Actually, the first step in becoming a Christian, is to realize that you are a sinner. Being honest with yourself and your heart is key to having a meaningful relationship with God. In this case, the angels are metaphors for anything good or pure, and the corruption of them is sin. The "isn't it sweet" is meant to be be darkly sarcastic, basically showing disgust for the human propensity to stumble, and to be imperfect. Not really much an uplifting song, but it is more for me a picture of what my sin is, and a reminder that I hate it. Hopefully it will serve as a picture of that to others who believe that wrong and right are not conventions of society. About all the lyrics on the album being darker, i believe this quote from Edgar Allen Poe sums up the reasoning behind it. "There are chords in the hearts of the most reckless, which cannot be touched without emotion."

dude, Thrice is a good band and all, but you thrice fans make me ill....who cared if someone thinks the bands lyrics have religious undetones to them. They are entitle to think that. The interpretation of the song is up to the listener to decide, and if they think the song(s) are/or aren't about religion then so-be it.
