I have contemplated this songs lyrical content for sometime...hell i even printed it out and put it in my folder until my friend tom (chickndood) took it out and threw it away. Main idea of this song, SUICIDE. while dustin is on this cliff.. he sees all the past people that have jumped. Since he thinks that suicide is the answer to better his current existence, he see his "crew" and they look happy, then after he jumps, he is floating face down with all the others...dead. But at last he is content

im curious to know why being a christian punk is an oxymoron. im christian, and i agree with all of you to say that this song has a unique meaning to everyone

I think that it's likely that dustin wrote these song lyrics to be relevant on different levels. For certain, these lyrics have a religious connotation, but they also have more personal and even social references. Hey, thrice.net, the word "punk" and its former ideals are a contradiction, so you have no place to spew that tired rhetoric. The Sex Pistols were a boy band put together by a porn-shop owner who was looking to exploit the alienated youth of London, so tell me, who are you or any "secular" person to preach the definition of punk? Really, there is no such thing, it's a state of mind mostly, and a lot of kids outgrow it to become the "corporate drones" they raged against. Conforming nonconformists are the most laughable of the bunch. So pathetic. Why do these punks use the internet to visit these sites when its obvious they are sponsored by corporate juggernauts?

As a song writer i can tell you that songs such as this are not written for a specific topic. It is to convey emotion and through that emotion trigger connection. Connection is why people listen to music, especially quality music such as this. From identification comes growth. The song can mean a myriad of things, and to claim that you know what was intended is simply ignorance. I can tell you well punk is, certainly not everything it is, and i cant tell you everything its not, but I know this; punk is questioning and exploring the world in which we live. Punk is not simply excepting what is told because it was told. Punk asks why. That is one thing you will find in every punk song that you will never find in many other genres. These questions do not necessarily make punk better (all though in my view it does hehe). Punk songs simply connect to those who question the world. If I were play a show in a sweater and ironed pants (which i have done before to prove a point), or log on to a corporate web site(god forbid...) does that in any way make me less punk then someone who has pink spiked hair and wears leather? Image is simply a sheild for those who refuse or are too ignorant to go any deeped. I urge you to dig deeper. i think the best interpretation of this song that anyone has come up with so far is that nick racino will probably jump of a cliff and kill himself due to gayness and fatness.. having a gay brother and a chubby sister

i think this is a wonderful song, i think it was actually the first song i ever heard from thrice... i believe it can have alot of different meanings, depending on what kind of mindset your in. the one i think that a 2 year old would get is that its about suicide, i really doubt that. thats way too obvious. to me its more about fooling yourself that the 'water' is deep enough. there are alot of possibilities, but its a great song.

Although every interpretation is valid, I think the point of the song is that sometimes, no matter how "deep" some of us like to be, one must deliberately dive into ignorance. To me, that is one way to balance myself; trying to think about everything in this world can be overwhelming. Knowing this, it's necessary to forget the conflicts and just be from time to time. I think every interpretation works not only by themselves, but combined to give the poem more depth.

no way this song is about suicide. thrice uses suicide as a metaphor... to signify the leap of faith you have to take for god, or for that matter, for anything you love.

This song reminds me of the first time I heard of Thrice. I was at the beach with my boyfriend (Oregon beach mind you) and he was climbing around on the rocks singing this song. I guess it kindof represents how we were unsure about a relationship but decided to take the plunge anyways. Lucky us. :D
