	I always figured this song was about calling your action into question, and completly changing your perception of yourself. Sorta shattering your self image. I think "Your eyes" is really figurative for yourown consciene.

	I agree with Deadbolt03 about it being about temptation. I interpret the first verse as being the devil following us everywhere we go trying to tempt us and then he does and rolls out laughing at us because he won. And from some things I've read that Dustin wrote, he's a very strong Christian and nearly all his songs have reference to Christianity. But we all differ in what we take out of lyrics because we have different backgrounds and beliefs so it's all good in the hood.

	hmm... I used to not like this song for some reason. barelylegal, when I read your comment, i thought it was kind of way out there, but I went back and read the lyrics and it actually does make sense. Imagine, you're wrong; eternalstroke is a genius. I actually felt a wave of emotion reading that post... =O I agree with br4nd0n and eternalstroke; The image, I think, is of when the disciples recieved the holy spirit and were empowered to "speak in tongues", and tongues of fire floated over their heads as kind of a manifestation of the spirit. What does fire do? Heat, yes, but it also provides light, which means it casts shadows and creats silhouettes. Actually, on thinking on it further, the setting with the disciples most likely isn't necessary, just the tongues of fire... actually, I'm sure of it: "Your eyes, resting in flame" - in other words, well, see below, to the eyes part... sorry, I revise parts as I think more, and it's not always in a terribly coherent, easy-tp-follow fashion. The imagery of the silhouette, I think, is this: since the holy spirit purifies and makes holy, like eternalstroke said, the tongues of fire casting light on a person could represent purifying them. But if something was in the way of the person and the light, that something would appear as a silhouette, hiding the fire and keeping the truth from the person, hence the "silhouette lies." My guess is that the eyes dustin keeps talking about are God's "eyes", holy-fying him; "your eyes, speaking in tongues." They sift his soul, in other words, purify him, like diamonds from coal. That shouldn't be too hard to understand. And, of course, they "kill" his false ideas about life when the light from the tongues of fire falls on him and reveals the truth. (work with me on the imagery, here) So that's my take on the song as a whole... a couple parts I don't understand, though: "They lace me along, Giving synapse of white lines. Then chasing the dawn, Story book syntax." I simply don't get this part. And: "Like hydrogen spread on fault lines. Or dead, kissing me with exposure to radon." so... what does hydrogen spread on fault lines, or a dead person (I think that's the implication) being exposed to radon?

	I think this song is yet another thrice reference to the book 1984. In the beginning of the book, Winston feels that he is alone in his beliefs that the Party is bad, but then for a split second his eyes meet with someone elses and believes that he might not be alone after all. Just thought i'd give a different take on the song.

	Hey guys, great posts. Here's some help: This song is about how the eyes of a girl represent to him the eyes of God. The most obvious nature of God is holiness. And if you haven't noticed already, many thrice songs express the idea of HOLINESS BEING DANGEROUS. holiness is a force that refines, that cuts at you, that radiates into you and through you, that sacrifices the bad parts of you and kills them. It tests you, tests your will, looks deeply into you for imperfections and helps you see yourself as what you are: a sinner who doesn't deserve eternally life, because anything that is impure cannot live forever. That is obvious in chemistry, and physics, and in the Greek philosophical Platonic ideas of perfect "forms" that were faultless versions of earthly realities. The eyes come at him speaking in tongues, burning in fire yet not burning itself, like the bush moses encountered. filled with the spirit, consuming him, hurting him, etc. "help me draw the dagger deeper" from IC means, help kill my impure nature and crucify it on the cross with Jesus. you have to understand the bible to understand these lyrics. HOLINESS HURTS. you stare at it too long and you will go blind, you will crack your teeth on pearls on its wisdom, you will take calculated risks (danger) to bless his name, you will smash your fists in mirrors trying to search for it. The eyes rest in flame and look at him, piercing his soul. whenever you deal with God's holiness you will get hurt. its scary. but he also will heal you. he'll strike you deep and true but then you'll have new life later. its like surgery.
