I can't help but relate this song to the 9/11 incedent. The idols being the trade centers and us worshipping "Ground Zero" (the place where our idols once stood). Focussing on what was done to us while drawing the shades against the real truth. Then sealing the deal by writing it in text books so a whole population of people will back what few have chosen to believe.

it reminds me of america... all our life we've been told we're this noble and great country and then all of a sudden we learn that our past is one dictated by economic exploitation not morals. Our beliefs in the nobility and the ideology of America is shattered but we still believe that our government is good and that society is something great... we will not realize the evils of our country because we are patriots and believe america can do no wrong, we might as well baske in our illusions, we all see what we want to anyways, and we kno this dream is at stake, that we actually could find out that we are not this great moral pillar and are just another nation with a history of exploitation. But we never tell that story in the textbooks, so the children believe in these ideals that america is supposedly about... only those who take an interest can see through the patriotic rhetoric

it is getting ubsurd with people using every message board around to instigate political banter. so what if terrorists killed 3000 american civilians? so what if american soldiers killed 40000 japanese civilions(hiroshima and nagaski, WW2)? it has nothing to do with "Where Idols Once Stood". human beings are human beings, and life is lost, regardless of what imaginary perimeter you live inside of. one life is not more important than another based on geographic location. none of this relates to thrice at all, but it had to be said to keep this forum for what it is intended for. i believe that these lyrics represent how people accept scientific discoveries about evolution, and human origin, but still go to church and pray. i feel the lyricist believes that people cling to old ways for peace of mind and to raise children in a world of morals. the best part of this song are the crazy timings and the unconventional drumming for a hardcore song.

there's no such thing as "just a song." people don't spend hours/days/weeks/months perfecting "just a song". songs have meaning. even if you personally think they're stupid. like songs about hot dogs and butterflies.

I think it's about idolizing people when you're younger and then when you grow up, you realize that your idols are only human just like you and it's scary. It's about becoming disillusioned as you grow older, at least to me. If you have a response good or bad to this, then please PM me. Thanks. :)

actually their both right.. from someone outside the us i can clearly say that 9/11 hasn't really thought americans enough.. you/they say it brought u together but it was much more than that, it was a leason about the belief that you're the strongest empire of the world but you aren't immortal, it's hard to see yourself as wrong, to see your mistakes and accept them. 9/11 was one of the greatest mistakes of america, it came from arrogence. can you tell me how the fuck did the terrorist succeed to steal YOUR planes with YOUR people in them into YOUR buildings. and more than that how you haven't learn a damn thing.

THis song is actually very obvious...Idols...being past figures of major historical events...did something important. This we monumented them with a statue or memorial to worship them and learn from their mistakes.
