Thrice Of Dust And Nations Guitar Tab

Of Dust And Nations Bass Tab
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Of Dust And Nations - Thrice
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tabbed by: Zamboni
Tuning: C G C F A D (Drop C)
Notes:
-Interesting tapping lick in the chorus and outro. When sliding from fret 3 or 5,
don't feel obligated to arrive at fret 7 or 9 before tapping again. It sounds fairly
random in the recording, so if you go higher or lower, it will still sound correct.
-Notice the subtle change at the end of the tapping lick in chorus two, last measure.
Legend:
p= pull-off
h= hammer-on
t= tap (with picking hand)
~= let ring
/= slide up

Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. Matthew 6:19 So...Thricecube, you still think this song has absolutely no biblical reference? As a Christian yourself, you should be able to find that verse and the idea that Dustin may sing about his faith in every song shouldn't be a suprise to you either, because as a Christian, you should know that Jesus called us to go and share his word to the ends of the Earth. You can speak without believing, but you can't believe without speaking. As for the Buddhist references, sure the teachings of Buhha were anti materialistic, but the Bible also teaches that everything in this world will pass away, which I think this song discusses as opposed to us being one with the Universe.

An interesting little tidbit that Dustin wrote in the Vheissu S.E. booklet: "This is a major nerd reference, but the 'sand will cover you' line, which was the genesis of the song, was taken from the Sci-Fi channel's mini-series version of Frank Herbert's 'Children Of Dune', which is based on the 2nd and 3rd books in the Dune series.

For a lot of us, the most important things in our lives show through in everything we do. For many christians, our faith is the most important thing in our lives. So, while a writer may not write this song about a specific passage or story from the Bible, doesn't it stand to reason that Dustin's faith might still show through in most if not all of his songs? He talks about putting you faith in more than steel, the material that we use to build our car frames and building frames... the material that we think will keep us safe. He says to put your faith in more than that. What is left to put your faith in. Titanium? No. That line, once you look at all its layers, is telling you that if you rely on yourself, you efforts will eventually fail. The only way to be safe forever is through something bigger than yourself, and not of yourself. The only thing I know of that matches that description is God. It's up to you to decide if God exists. The first stanza talks about things that man will accomplish. He says sand will cover them. He's giving you a visual picture about them being covered with dust and buried, but also, he's talking about sand running through and hour glass. He's saying nothing you can build will stand up to eternity. Finally, I think the line, "Don't store your treasures up, with moth and rust" is a quote from the Bible. If you care to know where it is, e-mail me and I'll look it up. Sorry for being long winded.

Dustin's obviously a Christian, so why are you trying to deny the biblical references?

Yes, Sand=Time. Ultimately though, I think it is about not holding to much on to the materials of the world, that there's something so much out there and what we have, we can't take with us. I especially like this line: "We live in but a shadow of the real". Dustin likes C.S. Lewis a lot, and that's a reference (I think) to C.S. Lewis' idea of the Shadowlands, which means that the world is a shadow of the Heavens and the life beyond the material. Great song, my second favorite on Vheissu.
