| this song is just pure raw emotions..all u people that sit here and argue about wether its a religious song or not seem to forget this fact...this song is about ur parents setting really high expectations for u, and u trying ur hardest to fulfill those expectations and failing...and bc u failed ur parents get mad and push u harder and make it seem that no matter how hard u try, u will never do well enough to fulfill ur parents high expectations("you set the bar too high", "your expectations become my failures")..and for dredarii: yes, under par is good in golf but in life its a differant story i think...in life u dont want to be under par bc that means ur alwayz below average..in this songs case however under par means that in ur parents eyes it seems like u are "under par" or not trying hard enough bc their expectations for u are too high..this is my take on the song, i may be wrong though | |

| this song is the anthem for kids whose parents want something for themselves to brag about rather than whats good for the child. "you set the bar too high" explains it all. and its about how the child is trying to hard to break away from them "when does my life become my own." and how its not because of bad influences because he was shaped by his parents and yes his religion, but by no means is this a religion based song. ive been a fan of thrice since they toured here to vegas and they opened for my friends band 7 foot midget, ive talked many times with dustin and eddie, even hung out with them a few times. and from what info ive gathered of them, they are the most down to earth, music-based band out there. not in it for the scene, not in it for the money, not in it to bitch, but because they love the music, and they wanna sing their emotions. in conclusion Thrice rox my sox all around the friggin block. but dont confuse them for preachers. | |

| this song isn't necessarily about dustin's christianity. yes, he is christian, but even he says that he doesn't like to preach his religion though his lyrics. i'm sure this song could apply to a lot of situations. basically just about how he's trying to do what he wants to do and people are criticizing him for it in some way.. damn good song. well, damn good cd. but the illusion of safety is coming. buy the illusion of safety. | |

| this song will have a different meaning for everyone, it could be related to religion, but then again it could be extremely literal, relating to some event in (dustin's) life. then again i highly doubt that... i wonder what StupidPunkRocker would have to say about this one... maybe he'll interpret it sometime soon.... | |

| ok, something just hit me. and maybe im just too damn concrete and blind to see it, but......the song is called 'Under Par'....but....under par is a good thing, right? i mean, in golf, you want to be under par, correct? and assuming the term 'under par' means the same thing in golf as it does in life, the title is contradicting the song. somebody help me out here.... | |

| simply because the word 'god' is incorporated into the lyrics once, it does no make the song religious. the mentionings of not meeting expectations doesn't necessarily connect the song with one's relationship with their parents, either. it could be about being viewed as an under-achiever through any perspective. songs usually are written to have some substance, but are left vague enough so to be able to affect more than just a select group of people. if it has some religious meaning to an individual, so be it, but arguing about the message is fucking stupid. for me, it's a good song when i'm lectured on how i'm never going to amount to anything- and not just my parents tell me this. it's kind of like a 'you're not the boss of me' type; an exressive rally for independence and all that good stuff. oh. and he says 'it's my life'. | |

| Though different from the christian undertheme of this song, it reminds me of some problems i have at home with my parents wanting me to be something im not. Hence "you set the bar too high" and "my focus is not yours" "when does my life become my own." etc. etc. I dunno, its just MY meaning, everyone's is differn't. Awsome band btw... | |

| chickendood: LOL. nicely said. vampyrik: why would you even say that? was that even worth your time? was it really worth it to come and say shit about christians and god and life and how they all seem to suck when all that is terribly irrelevant to this song? tip: dont waste your time on flaming something for no reason. think of what you couldve accomplished in the time it took you to say what you said. you couldve gotten milk or something. your bones could be that much stronger. oh well. your loss. i think this song is about his dad wanting him to be something he tries, but cant seem to be. i say its about his dad because most of the songs out now with this kind of message are generally directed to fathers. but who the hell knows. im pretty sure its directed to parents though, whichever one. i mean, '...but it seems im not the perfect son' that right there should tip everyone off to the fact that its directed to parents. there shouldnt be any argument there. but whatever the meaning, its a great song. very powerful, motivating. thrice owns you. | |
