Geoff said in an interview that this song is about people losing faith and basically just going to church because that's what they're supposed to do and kind of losing themselves and their own voice because they're caught up in other's beliefs.. (wake up in an outline and try to speak with the shattered voice of the lives we lead) .. it's basically about the way conformed religion detiorates faith.

As has been stated above, this song is primarily about how so many church-goers really don't even try to live out the messages they are supposed to learn every Sunday. Despite the large number of supposed "Christians" in America, the morals and values that Christianity upholds are being lived out less and less every day. I disagree with SickandTired, by the way. I do feel that this song promotes religion: "Do you hear the church bells are ringing? They ring for YOU." However, it promotes actually living a Christian life, as opposed to just going to church and calling yourself a Christian. (My faith is weak, but I still feel the message of this song. If you're going to be a believer, then "practice what you preach".

hmm, interesting. i guessed it had something to do with abortion or somekind of medical topic, that seemed obvious, but it was never confirmed. is geoff pro-life or is he in favour of abortion?

I think it is also making a reference to the people that claim to be religous, yet go against all of their "beliefs" when is says, "they're the halo of guilt hanging around your neck, next to the rosary you count, falling asleep". So people are, "falling asleep outside the chapel", not paying attention to the message of what they claim to believe.

i think fireslave has got it pegged down pretty well...i especially like the comment that agnostics think about religion more than many religious people...very well said
