BAND: Thursday
SONG: Dying In New Brunswick
DISC: Waiting

tabbed by Moonsoon3@aol.com

okay, this song has a quirky bassline and two clever guitars....i can give the basic
chord structure and some of the interesting guitaring but what Thursday seems to do
is imply a chord progression and have both guitars and the bass just do interesting
stuff around it. it sounds like there's a lot going on in this song and i'm giving
you what it is based on.

Will you look back on this night
As the day that ruined your life.
Will you look back on these city streets and say,
"Oh, God, where are you?"

In these city streets I hide my face.
I turn away when you look at me
And every night when I try and sleep.
I feel your hands all over my body.

OUTRO: pound away on Dm
Dm-->
you scratched away the street signs and you shot out all the stop lights
you smashed away the buildings, what would you have left?

I completely agree with KaleidoscopeEyes, considering I'm actually going through this situation as I am typing this, and this song just has such an enormous amount of meaning. Thursday is just unlike anyother band out there, and I cant wait until they come back to their hometown so I can see them!

let me clarify what i wrote above: "You told me on your birthday all the things that this place had done to you. And in the streets you walk. You hide your face because they don't believe that it's true. They say it doesn't happen that often. But it's happening right now" this is geoff starting by establishing a past to the problem...the girl told him about the rape and how no one would listen and beleive her. she's ashamed and hurting and the city is a constant reminder of what happened....she thinks about it so much, replaying it over and over in her head, and that's why it keeps happening, it doesn't end. "I'm writing you this letter to let you know I'm not alright. And in this city the streets are paved with hate And you cry yourself to sleep tonight. And say "no, there aren't enough love songs in the sky." this is part of the letter that the girl wrote to him after he left...nothing has changed, she can't get over it and she knows that he misses her. "You counted down the days till you could say "Bye-bye, city, bye-bye" You're walking down on Union You see the roads and know they're apart of you" this is the girl talking or writing to him that she knows that even though he left, the city is still a part of him, and although he left, he's still the same guy walking down union "I'm writing you a second time. To let you know nothing here has changed. The streets are still paved with hate. So you can cry yourself to sleep tonight" once again, the girl writing to him, letting him know that things still haven't gotten any better. "Will you look back on this night As the day that ruined your life. Will you look back on these city streets and say, "Oh, God, where are you?" " geoff addressing the girl, asking her basically if she will ever be strong enough to get by it, to stop hurting so much, or if the streets of new brunswick will be a constant reminder of the horrible things that happened to her. "In these city streets I hide my face. I turn away when you look at me And every night when I try and sleep. I feel your hands all over my body." this is the girl talking, talking about the rape, and how she feels, and the you is the rapist You streipped away the street signs and shot out all the stop lights. If you smashed away all the building what would you have left? this again is geoff's final comment to both him and the girl, that hating the city, and wanting to escape it or destroy it isn't going to solve much, it won't make them feel better, only more empty.

i'm not too sure, i got 2 impressions from this song. the first stanza makes me think of some form of sexual abuse. "you hide your face because they don't believe that it's true, They say it doesn't happen that often, but it's happening right now" those lines give me the chills, all i can think about is sexual abuse. but as the song progressed, i saw it more as getting away from a fucked up childhood. and talking about the town and the hate, is all the awful memories the person had to endure. i'm not sure, i could be way off base with either of those, but that's what i got from it.

This song took a while to grow on me, but now I really like it. I read in an interview with Geoff it's about a girl who got raped. poo.

yah...I think it's definitely about someone who endured something terrible in New Brunswick, whatever it maybe (probably rape since it was in the interview...). I think the last line is interesting...it could be saying that if you destroy the city and what it has always been since the traumatic event, you are also destroying the memories, and perhaps these memories are all the person knows..."If you smashed away all the buildings what would you have left?" Just a thought.

i think that parts of the song are written from the girl's point of view, basically the two verse-y parts beginning with "i'm writing you..." and the first part beginning with "you told me on your birthday" and the last part from "will you look back..." through the end are written from his point of view. then again, the last lines "i turn away when you look at me, and everynight when i try to sleep i feel your hands all over my body" could be the girl addressing the rapist, which is definitely lines that could give you the creeps. i think that the song also is about how leaving a place, and making it your goal to leave a place isn't really going to solve anything. it seems like geoff just wanted to get out of new bruswick so much, but it didn't solve anything. i think that i am sort of facing something like that but much much less severe...i'm going away to college and for the longest time i just kept saying "when i get out of this place everything will be alright and i'll be happy" but i've come to realize that i'll be missing a lot too, and that people are the same everywhere. i'm not escaping anything. my memories and my past will still come with me. i'm leaving behind a lot of good things. don't get me wrong, i still want to get out of here, but i know that it isn't going to be a magic cure to all my problems. i need to get over a hell of a lot of issues before i can be happy, and moving out of here is probably not going to solve much.

"And in this city the streets are paved with hate And you cry yourself to sleep tonight. And say "no, there aren't enough love songs in the sky." I think this song is either about lonlieness, or missing someone.

Will you look back on this night As the day that ruined your life. Will you look back on these city streets and say, "Oh, God, where are you?" that line...it just hurts. it's so realistic. i cry EVERYTIME i hear that line. i know that feeling...when something like that happens, where is god? why is god letting that happen. it's just not fair. this song is one of thursdays best...paris in flames rocks too. thursday is bad ass!!
