I saw an Thursday concert earlier in 2006. The lead singer explained that this song is about how his best friend shot himself a few days after they had a huge fight.

The perfected lyrics are: [Note: Where the ** are around "He's" in the final verse, means he only says it once and repeats the line without "He's" the other times....and sorry for being so specific...] Thursday - Steps Ascending Steps ascend, to a loaded gun The scent of matches hangs in the air A lit one flickers out in a heartbeat We don't want to see this A flash of light that's letting go Of an empty bullet case, but By the time it hits the ground, He's out of reach (Let go, let go) Out of reach (Let go, let go) Out of reach (Let go, let go) Out of reach (Let go, let go) (Out of, reach!) The wolves are closing in There's no room left to make ammends, but Do you remember when we'd fly that kite so high? All the time we've (wasted!) Spent (fighting!) We'll (burn!) in the fire of our regrets All the time we've (wasted!) Spent (fighting!) It's (blood!) And it's running down the stairs Freeze the frame Between the gunshot and the hole it makes A spinning bullet hangs in the middle There's no way to stop it It will surely hit the mark You can try to understand, but I'm giving up Giving up Giving up The synapses fire is right in time I'm giving up (Giving up) Giving up (Giving up) Giving up This should always stay...out of reach (Let go, let go) Out of reach (Let go, let go) Out of reach (Let go, let go) Out of reach (Let go, let go) The wolves are closing in There's no room left to make ammends, but Do you remember when we'd fly that kite so high? All the time we've (wasted!) Spent (fighting!) We'll (burn!) in the fire of our regrets All the time we've (wasted!) Spent (fighting!) It's (blood!) and it's running down the stairs (Here I...go...to him) (Here I...go...to him) (Here I...go...to him)[All throughout the verse] I ran down the stairs and into the garden (*He's* Out of reach)[All throughout the verse] Put both my hands into the soil In the spring You will bloom Like her heart through the blouse In the back of the ambulance As it turned and it turned in the streets Just one more turn won't you come back to me? As it turned it's red lights You were turning into... Red roses Red roses Red roses Red roses I'm not giving up...

poetictragedy is 100% correct. Geoff got in a fight with one of his friends and didn't speak to him for a very long time. his friend was killed and thrown down the stairs. he never got to say goodbye and this is his remorse.

Chihuahua, and poetictragedy5 I think both of you are right. Geoff talked about getting in a fight with his friend and how he died a year later. But I think that Chihuahua's got the other half of the story, the part of Geoff having all those nightmares. But that’s just my opinion of this great Masterpiece. lol.

This song is about when Geoff had a fist fight with one of his best friends, and he got so mad at him that he didn't speak to him, and a year later he was shot and killed, and Geoff never got to say goodbye. This was his way of doing it.

Man, this song sends chills down my spine. The imagery and the storytelling is nothing I've ever read (actually experienced in my head!) before. Just taking a clip of a scene when she gets shot to how everything transfers over from the blood to the red roses on her grave just makes you think. You really don't have to go into the meaning of this song or interpretation as it's pretty cut-and-dry. But it is interesting to see how it affects everyone because it makes me think about the tragedy of every single innocent person who had not a chance to live through something. Thursday really accomplished this well.

ahhh I love thursday. & I love this song. I especially love the last part. Geoff has a very unique sense of writing style, and it's one of the reasons I love Thursday so much.

does anyone else see a slight resemblance to w.h. auden's poem "victor" near the end? i feel as if i have seen inspiration from auden in thursday's work before, and that poem was the first i thought of upon hearing this song, though the similarity is only in the very end and is fairly weak...

'Theres no room left to make ammends by'. thats such a powerful line and i think this one line makes this song what it is. This song reminds me to never let the sun go down on my anger. If i get in any form of argument, i make ammends right away.

yep poetictragedy5...you are correct. Geoff said it at a show in texas awhile back. REALLY awesome song. a very talented bunch of guys and since drums, bass, and guitars are not my forte i'll have to say that Geoff has an amazing voice. Even in acousic Thurdsay stuff he still sounds really great. Melodic, passionate, powerful whether he's singing or screaming. This band is amazing...espcially live...go see them

i saw thursday and geoff explained what the song was about and then he told every one to tell someone they were close to how much they love them. this is one of the saddest songs ive ever heard, and its really scary how fast a life can just be snatched away like that. its not fair..but it happens...i urge every one of you to tell everyone of your friends and family how much they mean to you, cause they wont be here forever...they could be gone before you know it
