Guitar 2 does some really light harmonics or clean picking at the start.

Did you hear the trumpets play the day your father died?
Did a violin swell those circles under your eyes?
Did you play the part straight, like a marcher?
Get lost in the beat, thinking and feeling
Did the drums in the streets make the people dance?
Or fall to their knees as the sound?
Knock the leaves from the trees
As they fall from the branch, the look beautiful
As they hung in the air
More piano and some effects driven tremolo.
Spinning around
Did you float in the air?
Spinning around
There must be somewhere that cigarettes burn through the night
And the leaves don't abandon their trees to the light
Where the skies always clear
And the summer never ends
Last Chorus
Won't you take me there?

qualitywise I like the album version a lot more, but the demo has more sentamental appeal to me. Without a doubt an amazing song either way, especially since this was the song Geoff closed when he was here on their last tour.

This song means so much to me, considering that when I got the cd my grandfather was admitted to the hospital. as depressing as it is, i've connected his cancer with this song. the drums in the break down in the song fit in perfectly. it's just like a drumline. "There must be somewhere where cigarettes burn through the night, and the leaves don't abandon their trees to the light, and the sky's always clear, and the summer never ends. " amazing.

I honestly agree with satans_soulmate. Thursday has changed my life since the moment I started listening to them, and this is definetly a song that portrays why. Everytime I listen to this song, it feels like my heart just fills up with emotion. I get that feeling when I listen to many of Thursday's music.

i havent heard the demo but i probably should. anyways the main music of this song is awesome like the whole slow guitar hing. it reminds me of a kid in my class who plays the guitar and he made something that reminds me of this. awesome song but it doesnt really "start" until the line "did you hear the trumpets play...."

For shame. You shouldn\'t replace it. This is just a \'purdy\' song. I find no flaw in this track what-so-ever. I have the demo version but didn\'t play it often because Thursday said they were going to change it and I didn\'t want to get used to hearing them that way. They warned you! hahaha. This is possibly my favorite track off this record. It is just so beautiful. Geoff also said he had been working on this song for a long time, that it was the first thing wanted to play when he picked up a guitar-if you heard the podcast. I assume that it must have some profound meaning to it because of that...well all the songs seem to...but even more so? I don\'t know what I\'m saying anymore.

the thing about the album version over the demo version (despite the lack of instrumental equity in the replaced part of the song) is that the replaced part is so much more melancholy and leaves the listener with the 'last song on the album' feel that we know and love (you know, where you're kind of bummed, but feel like you've achieved nirvana to some extent).

Ok so this song is the best song ever written. HANDS DOWN because everytime I hear it I seriously come to tears. My boyfriend played the beginning part for me one day and I totally burst into tears. this song has so much emotion. and when he repeates the first part at the very end, his voice shows that this meant something. I love this song.

Not only do I like the demo better because of the obvious reason everyone else has stated: that they replaced an entire verse with just about 60 seconds or more of the instruments slowly going from "slow and emotional" to "fast and emotional", but, also I like the demo more because they switched some words around here and there, and for some reason I just think the demo's lyrics fit more and make more sense.

sinnedoh=correct. i too loved the demos more than the album (ESPECIALLY other side of the crash, no comparison there) but i definitely agree with the metaphor of the dying father being represented by falling autumn leaves as they die and leave the family tree. excellent song, instrumentals (at least on the demo) are excellent, they actually go with the song perfect-ly.

this version is amazing. I still love the demo, but this one just has a magic to it as well. I'm glad I have both versions. The old one is great and this one definitely fits the album itself better. I love that riff after "it won't be long 'til we find our way home". I wish I could listen to 6 minutes of just that. I think this song's about a girl who's father died at war. One old lyric that works with it was "When he shoots, he sings this song, doesn't know that she's been singing it too." then of course the whole "did you hear the trumpets play the day your father died..." and the whole song has the metaphor of the father dying like the leaves do in autumn. And the daugter wishes it would always be summer so the leaves would never die and fall from the tree. (Like the dad dying, falling from the family.) just my thoughts.
