All I Want
Toad the Wet Sprocket
Dm F

Nothing's so cold
As closing the heart when all we need
Is to free the soul
But we wouldn't be that brave I know
And the air outside so soft, confessing everything
everything
All I want is to feel this way
To be this close, to feel the same
All I want is to feel this way
The evening speaks, I feel it say....
G Am G F

| I immediately thought the song was about finding mutual subission with a lover. "Nothing so loud as hearing when we lie, truth is not kind and you've said neither am I" obviously they're passionate about eachother, but there isn't openess between them "BUT the air outside so soft, saying everything" and then in the next bridge "Confessing everything". A night, when they felt close, they were able to come to terms and find the courage to be open and honest with eachother, and give in to need and feeling. hey, just my sappy conclusion. | |

| To me it's about fighting a new realtionship when it's really time for it. Everything tells you it's right but you lie and close yourself off to it until you can't. It's all you want. LIke close friends being afraid to take the next step becuase they will lose all they have. Then you give into it. | |

| To me this song is about post break-up sex. The relationship has already fallen apart, but not for lack of love, and they get back together for this last love-making before they go their seperate ways. But he wants it to be like it used to be where they held each other close and he felt that old love. | |

| I definitely don't see this song as a breakup song. It certainly is about a relationship, but the lyrics suggest that although there is dishonesty, distrust, perhaps, in the relationship, it's all okay, and this is all he wants. It's an uplifting message because there is a point in every relationship -- good or bad -- where it comes obvious that something is not right. How we handle things not being right is what makes it good or bad. Great song. | |

| You know, I think EVERY single person in the World has heard this song, and maybe 3000 people know who it is by. It's freaking unbelievable. This song is just unbeatable as a pop rock song, and it's not even all that poppy. | |

| Damn, that' so true. This is the kind of stuff that got me started on music when I was young. Damn...I was like in 3rd - 4th grade when I heard this. Even then, I felt the strong sense of melody in this song. The chorus gave me a chill that I never experienced back then...and now have come to appreciate, love and seek. | |

| I first heard it in 1993, and the magic of that song remains each time i play it since then. there's not many songs that touches you the way this does. the thoughtful lyrics blends wonderfullyly with glen's warm voice and the melody floats along prefectly. heavanly. i would rank this alongside jewel's 'deep water' as the perfect pop rock song | |

| I love this song...I don't see snow or summer rain...I see spring. Right in the beginning of spring and the air smells all good and sweet and wonderful and it's the first warm day after a freezing coldass winter...that's what I see. As to the meaning, I see THAT as maybe two people who really care a lot about each other, but neither one really want to admit to the other the depth of their feelings, because they're both scared the other one doesn't feel the same...so they're throwing out what could be this really great wonderful relationship because they don't want to admit how they feel... That made sense, right? Maybe that's just my opinion because I want to believe I'm in that situation as opposed to being only one-sided. | |

| i agree with emo_ezralite...this is such a great song and only a handful of people know who sings it. the same can be said for pretty much all of their music though. i think this song is about two people getting back together after breaking up. he wants to be in love - to feel the same way, but maybe not necessarily with his ex. so regardless of what happens between them, he will be ok. or if they both missed each other, they love each other but it will never work because they can't overcome themselves - they arent "brave enough". | |

| I think the "air outside so soft" that is "saying everything" is referring to rumors. The two lie to each other, even though they're in love. He doesn't give a damn about what anyone says. Or about what she's not saying. He just wants to feel the way he does about her. | |

| I like the point itsALLprogramMUSIC made about there not being openness between them. I also agree with Desaparecida that it's about two people who do not admit how they feel about eachother, b ut I'm thinking that it doesn't necessarily have to be because of fear - maybe they just can't express their feelings for other reasons. Yet somehow they know, cuz the air... | |

| The song is about hanging on to one elevated moment, and knowing that it won't last, that there will be a letdown, but not caring. I think the post-break up sex scenario that Jag suggested is quite likely. | |

| no ones commented on this song? thats odd. well, i heard this song in 3rd grade, 11 years ago, and i fell in love with it. ive loved toad ever since - anyhow in this song i always imagine glen being out in the snow somewhere just thinking about this relationship and perhaps life in general and just saying 'listening' to what the world around him and his feelings are telling him. its an acceptance song, he is saying its ok whatever happens, he feels so spiritually close to the world - he will embrace whatever comes. anyone that thinks thats what the song is about, and likes that kinda feeling/message - check out "on your side" by pete yorn. | |

| I learned some interesting facts about this band recently. These teenage band members got the name when they were sitting around watching "Monty Python's Flying Circus" reruns. In one of those BBC spoofs, Eric Idle had an inane report about the "internationally famous rock band 'Toad the Wet Sprocket' will begin it's worldwide tour of Finland today..." He chose that silly name because he was trying to think of "the least likely name for a hit band". So when TTWS formed and recorded their first album (for $650 in a home studio, making it an album with one of the largest profit margins of all time, since it still sells a few hundred copies every week, essentially returning the cost of production on a weekly basis), they sent a cassette tape to Eric Idle and he corresponded with them about their new-found success. Interestingly, this song, "All I Need", the only #1 hit they ever had, was nearly cut from the album because the record company said something had to go and this was the band's least favorite tune. | |

| I always thought the line in the bridge was, "It won't matter now / whatever happens will be". Either way, to me this song was always about how he's searching for true love and he feels like he doesn't have it with the girl he's with, but he still can't break away from her. One of the best songs for me to sing along to on the road. | |
