** NOTE **

This version augments the TAB work of Michael Hanson by giving a complete
transcription of the song with the chords and fingerings notated from the
capo (at the 4th fret) as opposed to the nut. The chords are slightly
different from Michael Smith's chord transcription, but the lyric is
exactly the same. My work was done independently, and is humbly submitted
to improve on what is already in existence in this suberb archive. Enjoy!

This key to this song is getting the back-and-forth bass lines, and
following the tempo (which I have done my best to designate). I would
recommend using a flat pick and -- in general -- let it ring! Give a
listen to the CD (which I would highly recommend if you don't already have
it). This will help with the vocal line as it changes from chromatic keys
like G to F# and back -- really, this is what makes the song sound so cool.

Have fun! I welcome any comments or corrections:

It's about two people (close friends?) who have some ongoing argument or disagreement, but instead of addressing the real, serious issue, they work out their tension by bickering over which country music singer they prefer (Loretta Lynn or Nanci Griffiths). And all the while they have an unspoken agreement that the real issue will remain unmentioned.

I always thought this song was about a double date with one guy serving as the wingman who got doubled up with the outspoken one who wants to talk politics, death, and taxes. Quonset - I like your post. Song seems a little different to me now. Still a great song by a great band who I got to see live in Boston back in like '98 or something. Great show.

I thought it was about two parents arguing about their divorce and which child stays with whom. Then when everything is settled they change their mind again.
