h= hammer, p=pull, ~= vibrato, /,= slide up or down, b= bend
This is the last track on Hell Below/Stars Above, and it's probably the best
song on the cd. There's 2 guitarists here, and both guitars tune standard, EADGBe.
Guitar 1 (Todd):
Start out the song holding an open E chord(0-2-2-1-0-0) and knock on the body of
the guitar, making that cool ringing sound. Listen to the song to get the timing and such.
Here's the main part of the song, played gently (slightly muted too)for the first
half of the verse and normal for the second half:
e----------------------------------------------------------------------------
B----------------------------------------------------------------------------
G-----------------------6-6-------------------------------6-6----------------
D-----2-2-2-2-2-2-2/-6--6-6-7-7----7-7/-9-9-9-9-9-9-9-7--6-6-6-6---6-6-----
A-----2-2-2-2-2-2-2/-6--4-4-7-7----7-7/-9-9-9-9-9-9-9-7--4-4-6-6---6-6-----
E-----0-0-0-0-0-0-0/-4------5-5----5-5/-7-7-7-7-7-7-7-5------4-4---4-4-----
Just listen to the song to get the exact rhythm down
Play during the chorus ("catch that light...") :
e----------------------------------------------------------------------------
B----------------------------------------------------------------------------
G----------------------------------------------------------------------------
D--------11--11---9-9---2----2-2/--11--11---9-9---2----2-2/------------------
A--------11--11---9-9---2----2-2/--11--11---9-9---2----2-2/------------------
E--------9---9----7-7---0----0-0/--9---9----7-7---0----0-0/------------------
e----------------------------------------------------------------------------
B----------------------------------------------------------------------------
G----------------------------------------------------------------------------
D--------11--11---9-9---2--2/7--7-7/--11--11---9-9---2-----------------------
A--------11--11---9-9---2--2/7--7-7/--11--11---9-9---2-----------------------
E--------9---9----7-7---0--0/5--5-5/--9---9----7-7---0-----------------------
Let that last E power chord lead into the verses, and let it ring for a while the
last time you play it (the start of the interlude).
Interlude (before the solo):
e----------------------------------------------------------------------------
B----------------------------------------------------------------------------
G----------------------------------------------------------------------------
D-------------------------6--7-------6h7-9---7p6---------------x------------
A------------7~(let ring)------------------------9~------------x------------
E----------------------------------------------------------------------------
After that just play the main verse part 4 times during the solo and then the
chorus. The song ends with the open E chord tapping like before.
Guitar 2 (Clark):
Opening: play this on the high e string:
e-------12p11---12p11---12p11---12p11--(OR)---12(whammy)-etc.----------------
Intro solo:
e----------------------------------------------------------------------------

G---------------9------------------------------------------------------------
D-----11---9-11---11---------------------------------------------------------
A----------------------11----9----9------------------------------------------

During the interlude play the same as the opening(on the high e string).

LYRICS:
In the middle of a house,
In the middle of nowhere,
Bodies glide from room to room.
I hate these walls--
They speak to me;
Hey, skin like a doll, you're no friend,
Of the family.
Chorus:
Catch that light,
It falls in subtle patterns;
Crawls in, and tells them when their time is up,
And when it's over...
He takes her hand,
And he kisses her cheek;
She's a doll, oh yeah, she's his,
Spitting image;
When you're gone,
You're still a part of me,
Hey skin like a doll you're no friend,
Of the family.
Chorus
When it's over....
Now it's over.
Chorus
When you're gone...
You're still a part of me.

| I hope someone knows the meaning of this song b/c I don't have a clue, but my first guess would be about some guy who molestes his daughter or something, I'm sorry if that sounds fucked up, but so are a lot of the Toadies' songs, either way, I still think this is one of the Toadies far best, It's so amazingly powerful, and no one else could ever sing it like Todd, I can only listen to this song when i'm in a bad mood or a bit depressed b/c it always brings me down, but at least it makes you feel something, nothing like a lot of shit music that's out there... no offense, but the only good rap song is "Gangsta's Paradise" and N'sync, backstreet boys, and any other boy pop bands should never have been formed, and despite Britney Spear's hottness, her music sucks ass too... what are these people doing to music? no wonder so many people have to skip back a generation or two to listen to top quality music, with an exception of a few bands... sorry for getting off topic, but it's true... | |

| i love this song it is by far my favourite one of theirs. the guitars are very haunting. a lot of interesting interpretations, i tend to agree with the people that mention it could be about a loss. the frustration and sadness along with the guitars does kind of make me think of a friend i lost . it does have a very ''gloomy sunday" feel to it, though a little more aggressive. breakdown: in the middle of a house, in the middle of nowhere bodies glide from room to room: --this makes me think of depression, how you just go through the motions. where you are and what you do doesn't really matter, you're just here and you're doing this. i hate these walls, they speak to me: --he's tormented by the loss. perhaps because he feels guilty about what happened. ''hey skin like a doll you're no friend of the family": --makes me think of a suicide note. when i went through my own depression i called myself 'the puppet' because that's how i felt. perhaps there was a suicide note and that is what it said (or boiled down to) catch that light, it falls in subtle patterns crowds in and tells them when their time is up and when it's over: --oracles. he's a bit traumitised from the loss, and trying to look for meaning and sense in everything around him. takes her hand, and he kisses her cheek she's a doll oh yeah, she's his spitting image: --daddy, brother, boyfriend, friend, whatever. i'm seeing this as the person who took control of the girl and drove her over the edge. the ''she's a doll/she's his spitting image" makes me think of control. like she's no longer her own person, she's who ''he" made her. when you're gone you're still a part of me: he still loves this person, she's still someone very important in his life, even if she is no longer there. he's feeling this loss in a bad way. NOW IT'S OVER: --the way screams this at the end tells me one of two things he's going from inaction to action, either joining this person or looking to do something to the person that pushed her or he's conceding to the fact that she's gone. ---that's just my thoughts. i'm thinking it could be about a close friend, or maybe even a relative. | |

| I don't know what he wrote it about, but here's my interpretation of it: My mom had cancer & died in our dining room, where her hospital bed was & hospice nurses were watching over her - "In the middle of a house". My family is huge and all of my brothers & sisters would come & go constantly the last few weeks, not knowing what to say, and looking like zombies - "Bodies glide from room to room." I sat at her deathbed and kept telling myself I should have spent more time at home, hanging out with her - "I hate these walls, they speak to me." Radiation & chemotherapy had made her hair fall out, and I shave my head - "She's his spitting image." It also made her skin clammy and she looked like a wax dummy - "Hey skin like a doll." She was the heart of my family, so I view this line - "You're no friend of the family" - as you mean basically everything to this family & what are we gonna do now? I stayed up until about 5:30 am sitting with her the morning she died. Then - "He takes her hand, and he kisses her cheek." I went to bed, & she died shortly after the sun came up on April 8, 2001. - "Catch that light, It falls in subtle patterns. It crawls in and tells them when their time is up And when it's over." This album came out right when she got sick, and she died about 4 months later. Maybe Vaden, the singer, went through something similar...FYI, The Toadies broke up & now he sings for the Burden Brothers, you should check them out, I'm from Dallas, TX & they play here all the time. Later Catch that light, It falls in suble patterns. It crawls in and tells them when their time is up And when it's over. | |

| Wow long time since a post. This song is straight up about a bouncer who works at a whore house who is in love with one of the prostitutes. "In the middle of a house, in the middle of nowhere. Bodies glide from room to room." "I hate these walls, they speak to me" obviously the place reminds him of what he has to endure watching people glide from room to room. "Your no friend of the family" basically saying you can't bring home a hooker. "When its over, he takes her hand and kisses her cheek" obviously this is after the act. "She's a doll...she's his spitting image" ...basically he wants to believe in the love. I believe it says "When your gone, your still a part of me" instead of where. And that explains itself. When he says now its over, he ends the thing but at the end he is saying the she is still a part of him. Sweet song nonetheless | |

| I think this song might be about how there was a girl and she didn't feel loved so she killed herself. The narrator is another family member talking about what happens afterwards, such as how everyone just glides around the house sort of sad and empty. Also how the father is at her funeral and is wondering where she went but reminding her that she will always be a part of him. This is also why she has skin like a doll. The light I'm assuming is the light people say is leading you to heaven and furthermore he may be telling everyone to catch it cause its your only way to heaven. | |
