Lyrics
-* I think thats what he sings, but I'm not sure, if you can help....

I come from the water,
I crawled upon the shore.
I left my brother there,
I got what I came for.

I sucked that water in*
and rolled upon the sand
It burned beneath the sun
to be a man.

I come from the water.

I come from the water.
That weren't no easy thing.
Its more than nature,
its like my destiny.

I stood upon these legs
and held my head up high.
It burned beneath the sun
to start a new life.

I come from the water.

Life in the desert
just to be together
the same forever
the same forever
It moves beneath me
It pulls me body
My pulse beats harder,
so far from the water.

I love to see the sun
in spite of all its done
I pray for saving rain*
I pray to live again
I come from the water.

Solo

I come from the water.

My first attempt at tabbing out something, if I've made a breach of
etiquitte, ooooppss!

I think it's about living with your problems to get to something you want ("life in the desert just to be together..." and "I love to see the sun in spite of what it's done"). I don't know. It's a great song, no matter what it means.

religion? i dont see it that way. in my opinion, i would say that the water was a safe, but boring life, a life where he didnt go out and party, he didnt do anything, he just sat around. now, he's in the desert, its hot, its hard to breathe, but, its what he wants, even though its not what is best for him, its what he wants. and he prays for the sun, then he prays for the rain, then he prays for the life again. pray doesnt mean "pray" i think, it means wants

this song is obviously about evolution. he's talking about evolving from water animals and living on land.

i see some of the other meanings, but i personally think its about evolution. I got what I came for. = he adapted, found what he needed i.e. food. Emerged beneath the sun/ To be a man. = quite obviously, he came from the water as whatever he was, then grew and evolved to become a man. this is just my thoughs, no more or less right then any other interpretation.

ok, "the water" is definitely symbolic. I think you guys are kind of missing it though. The water is how his life used to be, with a preacher as a father etc. A religous life. He crawled out into teh burning sunlight (like hell) into temptation for the worldly desires. He PRAYS for shade and rain, as in he still wants the comforts that gospel gives him, while enjoying the world of sin he wants to live. "I love to see the sun/in spite of all it's done" is great because the "bad" things he is doing don't inporve his life, but he loves to do them anyways.

Yeah i'd definetly have to agree with scottpeltz here. It also seems like this song has a connection with the song "BackSlider" and how he talks about being Baptised in it. You are re-born again and you can start your new life because you sin has been washed away. "Emerged beneath the sun, To start a new life." But all in all, Scottpeltz, i think you got it.

I liked the evolution explanation. Pretty much what I thought too.

I think this song has a bit of a double meaning. The religious parable makes sense, particularly in connection with Backslider. At the same time, it is definitely also referring to evolution. We as humans evolved from primitive sea creatures. I think it's actually a conflicted song about the search for spirituality and a feeling of oneness with the world in the face of religion. "I come from the water" plays off both the idea of baptism and original sin (man being born of purity, but then becoming corrupted and "backsliding") as well as the idea that we evolved out of primitive life and have a desire to return to the simplicity and purity of that oneness and connection with the universe.

I was thinking that for the longest time! I REALLY think this band was either Christian or just Christians who played music. All of their songs have a lot of symbolism about it. Coming from the water, to me, is like being born again: "I baptize you in the name of the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit." And basically that's when you're reborn into the church.
