You Wanted More
Tonic

From the critically acclaimed album, Sugar! The first time I heard this song a few years
back, I knew that I had to learn how to play it. Took many playbacks on my Winamp player
to get it down straight and I'm still not sick of the song yet.

Drop D tuning (tune the low E string down one whole note)

p - pull off
x - palm mute

this reminds me of a summer love. it was amazing until school had to start again in the fall and i tried to keep us together but he just let it all fall apart and when for some other girl who he said was jsut hotter than me. he always has to hide his feelings from me and is scared of me, scared of love. and thats what we had. anyways this song reminds me of him and how nothing is ever enough for him. that he keeps searching for something when he should just be searching for himself.

I think truly believe this song is about a young man who's parents worked and are in fact clowns within the Barnum and Bailey's Circus, but he will not take it anymore. They wanted him to grow up to be one of the best circus clowns the big top had to offer. Check out these lyrics: Love is color- "This is obviously talking about face paint!" Love is loud- "Those annoying horns they're always beeping!" Love is never saying that you're too proud- "It's ok to be a clown. Smile!" Love is trusting- "Trusting that you're parent's won't tell all of you're friends that you live in a tent and you are in fact a clown." Love is honest- "Nothing is more honest than public humiliation!" Love is not a hand to hold you down- "Love is in fact a large red shoes that steps on you when you least expect it." I don't know when I got bitter- "The boy states his confirms his hatred of the big top." But love is surely better when it's gone- "He will love his clown family more when he gets the hell out of there!" My take on the famous "You Wanted More" song.

I think it means that ppl expect too much from him and that he doesnt think he can live up to what they want, and because of that, it has ruined his outlook on how love should be, or how he once viewed it. I love this song, it reflects a lot on how i look at love -

this song relates to one of my ex's and my relationship...he wanted so much more than i could give because of the age difference and distance between us. i wanted to have fun while he wanted me to devote myself to him, and i just couldn't do it at the time...i dont regret it either though, it worked out for the best

'Cause You Wanted More More Than I could Give More than I could handle In a life that I can't live You wanted more More than I could bear More than I could offer For a love that isn't there" I remember when this song came out a long time ago, and thinking how relatable it was, even though I had never really been there before, till very recently, and now, this song keeps popping up in all sorts of places. I don’t know for me who the “I” was or the ‘You” is (if you go by the lines) but it all sorta fits into things to much for me I think. i met this girl a few months back, we 'dated' for 3 months (funny, but i knew the minute i met her i didnt want anyone else), you know, one of those things were you just fall into everything right away, as much as we both tried to slow things down, it just took a life of its own. And somewhere into things she kinda pushed for the 'relationship' definition, exclusiveness type of thing, and she even pushed for those 4 little words this song is about, and i gave it to her, all of it, and really did and do feel that way, (sorry, cant bring myself to actually say it here), and she knew it, or it wouldn’t have come up I think… makes me sigh pleasantly thinking back on the moments, the look on her face, the feelings… I gave her what she wanted, but it turned out to be to much for her I think, or more than she had, more than she could offer back even though I think she really did want to, and i was the one who couldn’t handle it though. (funny as it is, its really not funny at all). I gave her what she wanted, only to find out, I think, that the ‘love’ really wasn’t there for her, or maybe she couldn’t handle it either, I don’t really know, probably a bit of both I guess, I do want to believe her in how she felt, or what she said though. But for certain reasons that made things to complicated, I couldn’t live in her life, or the life she wanted, and the life I wanted was with her, and I couldn’t live that life. But she never will admit what she did wrong either, even though I know most of it, she wont own up to it, or wouldn’t, maybe never will, maybe if she did, I would just end up that much more bitter? And at some point I did get bitter, bitter from the lies she told, bitter from the way she acted, bitter with myself for not letting go sooner, bitter for the way I acted, bitter for a lot of things. Sad really the way it all went down, the way it is now. But I can say for sure, at this point, it isn’t better when its gone, maybe someday though we can talk again, become friends, maybe then it will be better that its gone, but not now, not for me, I think maybe for her though, witch is really kinda sad for me. Funny how I can see this song from both sides, and from somewhere in between, and I hope I never do again though. Love is bold Love is tragic.

Its talking about how he loved this girl. The first verse is telling what she thought love was, and the 2nd is what he thought it should be. She would hold him down, blame everything on him(she was never wrong), and she still wanted more from him, something he couldnt give her because he wasn't loved(for a love that isn't there) She wanted him to be what she wanted, to live the life she wanted, and never let him be himself. In the end it made him bitter from trying to work through things so many times, for so long. He is the one who had to make himself better, when he got depressed, or upset, she would never try to help him, or make things better.

Maybe he's saying love is a simple thing. People try to hard to define love and compare it to lust and all things associated with that. He just wanted to love a girl and she wanted something complicated?
