i believe this song is about maynards inner child. His real name is James as we all know and Jimmy is sometimes used as a nickname of sorts for james. Think of it as a name people used to call him when he was a kid. anyway something happened when he was 1, either a family member died or moved away (most likely female), and it tormented him. So in the song he talks about coming home to make peace and free his inner child.

aight nvm i figured it out. the light is his hope and longing to connect with himself and to accept his past. we wants to heal and free himself of the pain in his life and the light represents his hope for peace.

yeah, i can definitely see the thing with his mother and stepfather, the main reason i took it the way i did was that i can relate to it that way.....my girlfriend and i live like 900 miles apart, we talk constantly on the computer and phone but we rarely get to see each other, and so when we do its just hard to leave.....thats why the song meant what it did to me

While the story concerning the death of Maynard's mother is convincing when listening to this song, it doesn't ring true. This mistake was that of Rolling Stone Magazine (the staff of which later printed a retraction of the article) ; Maynard's mother is actually still among the living. Rather, I tend to agree with idiotic in that she remarried someone Maynard strongly disliked when he was 11, and that the song is about reuniting with his 11-yr-old self in order to come to terms with this stressful period in his past ; coming home, so to speak.

This song is about a young Maynard. Here's the proof, he is Maynard James Keenan; James = Jimmy what little kid wants to go through life being called Maynard? Second the title is lowercase jimmy not Jimmy to show that it's a child. Thirdly Maynard grew up in Ohio, which goes with the lie "under a dead Ohio sky". and lastly eleven is when his mother married his stepfather whom he hates so much as was stated in earlier interviews.

Great story, Uppity, moving and brings the entire song full circle. The alternate personalities of Eleven and Jimmy make quite a lot of sense, and bring together one of the lines I hadn't thought much of in the past: "Until one and one are one." Thanks for the enlightenment.

We all know that it's about his inner child. But even more, it's about reuniting with it and dealing with an experience he had when he was 11. Something happened (read datheR's post) at that age that was very difficult and it's one of those repressed occurances that psychiatrists spend years with patients trying to bring out and get them to accept. He talks about "coming home" maybe not in a literal sense but meaning that he is coming to grasp with the events of eleven. The event left him torn and it almost seems like he's describing a therapy session. "Moving me with a sound Opening me within a gesture Drawing me down and in, Showing me where it all began, Eleven " -Hypnosis? if so, then the rest of the song is about what he saw in that state of hypnosis. It makes sense. Read through and listen to the song with that in mind...

Duke... Parabola is a tool song... and insulting people randomly is not cool. Maybe he added the maynard B/c of Brother Maynard from Monty Python and the holy grail?

Who fucking cares his real name is James Keenan. He added Maynard later as one of his ultra tongue in cheek jokes that only he and his bandmates really get. Once again I hate you all.
